Old Time Home Schooling

Most of our generation was HOME SCHOOLED in many ways.

1. My mother taught me TO APPRECIATE A JOB WELL DONE .
"If you're going to kill each other, do it outside.
I just finished cleaning."

2. My mother taught me RELIGION.
"You better pray that will come out of the carpet."

3. My father taught me about TIME TRAVEL.
"If you don't straighten up, I'm going to knock
you into the middle of next week!"

4. My father taught me LOGIC.
" Because I said so, that's why."

5. My mother taught me MORE LOGIC .
"If you fall out of that swing and break your neck,
you're not going to the store with me."

6. My mother taught me FORESIGHT.
"Make sure you wear clean underwear, in case
you're in an accident."

7. My father taught me IRONY.
"Keep crying, and I'll give you something to cry about."

8. My mother taught me about the science of OSMOSIS .
"Shut your mouth and eat your supper."

9. My mother taught me about CONTORTIONISM.
"Just you look at that dirt on the back of your neck?"

10. My mother taught me about STAMINA.
"You'll sit there until all that spinach is gone."

11. My mother taught me about WEATHER.
"This room of yours looks as if a tornado went through it."

12. My mother taught me about HYPOCRISY.
"If I told you once, I've told you a million times.
Don't exaggerate!"

13. My father taught me the CIRCLE OF LIFE.
"I brought you into this world, and I can take you out..."

14. My mother taught me about BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION .
"Stop acting like your father!"

15. My mother taught me about ENVY.
"There are millions of less fortunate children in
this world who don't have wonderful parents like you do."

16. My mother taught me about ANTICIPATION.
"Just wait until we get home."

17. My mother taught me about RECEIVING.
"You are going to get it from your father when you get home!"

18. My mother taught me MEDICAL SCIENCE.
"If you don't stop crossing your eyes, they are going to get stuck that way."

19. My mother taught me ESP.
"Put your sweater on; don't you think I know when you are cold?"

20. My father taught me HUMOR.
"When that lawn mower cuts off your toes, don't come running to me."

21. My mother taught me HOW TO BECOME AN ADULT .
"If you don't eat your vegetables, you'll never grow up."

22. My mother taught me GENETICS.
"You're just like your father."

23. My mother taught me about my ROOTS.
"Shut that door behind you. Do you think you were born in a barn?"

24. My mother taught me WISDOM.
"When you get to be my age, you'll understand.

25. My father taught me about JUSTICE .
"One day you'll have kids,
and I hope they turn out just like you !"

*******************************
And finally the Quote of the day:

"Faith is not about everything turning out ok.
It's about being ok, no matter how things turn out."

This is meant for the over 50 crowd because the younger ones would not believe we truly were told these "EXACT" words by our parents

They also didn't include FOREIGN AID.
Eat your food, children in China are starving.

Never did figure how that helped them, but if
Mom said so........ :D

Hi,

My mother saw no humor in the situation when I asked if I couldn't just mail my peas to some Chinese kid... ;)

Some people would be scared to say some of those things to their kids nowadays...they might hurt their feeeeelings.

My Dad never seemed to have that problem. :( As close as he came was telling me the only reason he didn't lock me in the grain bin until I was old enough to know better is the law wouldn't let him.

I see nothing there that I haven't heard some many moons ago. Perhaps the speaker was different but the message was the same.
Did anyone else have a mom that was a 'shaker' rather than a 'spanker'? My Mom would shake me till I thought my neck would break. Of course I was always innocent of whatever I was accused of doing.

Was it effective? I could probably shake or paddle LR for an hour and ten minutes later he would forget it. Time outs don't phase him and all the little torture chores I learned from my dad he seems to take delight in. Sister Beatrice had him for five(5) minutes and told me to take him home and make him play dolls with his sister. He seems to fear that far more than any corporal punishment. I can only conclude (at risk of excommunication) no one can find your personal hell as quickly as a Catholic schoolteacher.

My grandmother once talked of punishments she had to deliver. It seems my aunt would change her ways with the treat or use of the yardstick while Dad and my uncle saw taking a paddling stoically as a badge of honor. She adopted the strategy of taking away Dad's books for infractions and my uncle's tools. Being a cruel and evil parent takes a knowledge of psychology and use of imagination. I regret I never had the pleasure to know my great grandparents and their respective opinions on the subject. I would have far preferred a paddling or shaking to some of the atrocities my Dad committed on me in the name of discipline.

This is true! Good post. Every point has a familiar ring. The trouble with things now is that someone ALWAYS gets their feelings hurt. It's time to cowboy up America, let boys be boys, and girls be girls. When I was a kid ONLY women wore ear rings, and sailors had tatoo's. All of us in our family were tought to tell the truth and speak your mind. We didn't hurt each others feelings. We had some exciting conversations over dinner. We sure didn't care if foreigners visiting this country got their feelings hurt.
