Old style grips??

First time post: I have gp-100 #174-******, I needed some grips and I bought some split grips for the old style gp-100. I notice that the round aluminum cylinder is too big to fit in the hole at the bottom of the frame. Can I take a mallet and pound on it? will I damage anything by doing this?.

The early split rubber grips were made for the early 170 prefix GP's, the aluminum locator pin was not made to be removed from the grip frame, they had kind of a ribbed belt around the middle of them and were pounded in by Ruger and meant to be left in there............. it's probably larger than the later locator pins which were made to slip in and out.

The split grips work fine on later GP's, you could gently tap the old locator pin but be careful not to peen the end of it. I tapped a pin out of a 172 prefix GP, I guess someone put it in there, and it took some effort.

Thanks for the reply, maybe I should call ruger and get a locator pin for my gun.I hope that I can still use the old grips.

The old grips work fine with the new locator pin, I've got a pair on a 4" fixed sight GP right now, with the new locator pn.

I got the split grips with the big grip locator pin. It took some effort but was able to fit the pin in the grip frame. The other problem I ran into was at the top of the grip it has a recess next to the hammer pivot pin. After about 6 dryfires the pivot pin will work it's way out. I had to put a leather shim in this recess to keep the pivot pin in place. It's small enough that you can't tell it's there. Next time I break it down all the way I just have to remember not to loose this shim. Out side of that small problem they fit great. Unfortunately I don't have a picture of the right side where this shim is.

This GP was manufactured in Oct last year.

41manor44- Is your Gp a 357? I did not know they came with 7 shots, mine is a six shot.Thanks for your input.
