Old scopes

I recently removed an old Weaver K-3 in the course of replacing it with a newer optic for a friend's rifle. There appears to be nothing wrong with the old piece (American-made steel tube) except that the ocular lens is highly reflective, giving off a lot of glare if there's any kind of light behind me.

My question is: Is this normal in older glass (perhaps no lens-coatings back then), or is it just irreparably damaged (coating rubbed off or something else)?

I have an old Weaver 330, made in El Paso, that I removed from a pre WWII Remington 141 and it too glares. At dawn and dusk it lets through less light than your unaided eye. However, it was about the first affordable rifle scope ever made.

Hi I have had many old K weavers and the straight tubes were very bad when the sun was low in the sky I sold most of them off but did keep a few of my favorites with the fine crosshairs also they are not sealed and have a habit of fogging up on cold damp days
