Can some one tell me if a XR-3 or XR-3 red grip will fit a OMV. I am on vac at my brothers and have found a pair of XR-3 and a Pair of XR-3 red grips, both sets are stag, going on the auction block Friday and and would like to buy a set if they will work on a OMV. If I had the guns with me I would just try them.

XR3-red grips fit the "old" or "original" Vaqueros. XR3 grips will not fit. You need the XR3-reds.

Be advised that '55 to '62 XR-3 grips have the grip locator dowel in a slightly different place than do post '04 New Model XR-3 grips.

That's if I'm remembering the facts correctly. I could go down into the dungeon and look....... :D

I think you are right. caryc has some pictures that show the different grips, maybe he will show them again.

Say, what is this OMV? I am aware of all the "New Model" Vaquero and New Vaquero variations, but not aware of any three screw Vaqueros.... :? I'd certainly want one if there was.... Did I miss something after all this years?.... Sorry couldn't resist.... After the last conversation on this subject....

Yes, to answer the question ,you'll need the XR3-red grips, for your "older" Vaquero and yes, the "new" XR-3's have a pin location different ,slightly off by about 1/16 of an inch, same hole "almost" but need to elongate it, and there is NO "notch" (cut out slant) at the top front of the "new" XR-3...............gotta 'modify' either one to make them work properly......................
gotta go and reload my "clips".... 8)

Oh, I knew about that, what I was asking is whether they designated them as old models when they were in production.

thanks everyone. Hope I can get the Pair of XR-3 red grips with out paying an arm or leg for them.

Of course not! When they were in production, it was the 'only' model. Not until the "New Model" was introduced, did the term "Old Model" make any sense.

That's not entirely true. If you remember in 1962 or 1963 Ruger changed their Flattop to a raised rib sight model, and they changed the grip frame. They didn't call the Flattop model an Old Model when it would have been proper to do so. So there were two different Blackhawks from 1955 to 1973 and Ruger only called them "Blackhawk".

Your right. I guess you could 'qualify' that with the type of action (older 3 screw and the newer two pin type).

A familiar sight, street and 5of7 arguing and stirring the pot for no other reason than the sake of doing so. When we correct folks that use the term "Old Model" incorrectly, you may not like what we have to say but at least we are respectful and are trying to help. Not stir up trouble. Our intentions are good, yours are not.

Craig! I have not said anything to you on this post. I only replied to Rclark to the fact that Ruger had a chance to call the Flattop an Old Model and the raised rib Blackhawk a New Model but chose not to. As for Vaquero or old model Vaquero I only stated that all Vaqueros are New Models even the old model Vaqueros.

One must stop and think and realize that there is no stead fast rule that you can't call a Vaquero an old model Vaquero. Some of the Old Model Ruger Collectors decided that old model only meant a 3 screw. And it was an insult to refer to a New Model Ruger as "old model". Lets face it, some 3 screw Ruger collectors would not have a new model in with their "Safe Queens". They found that they had to correct anyone that used the term old model Vaquero. Well if any one thinks that old model Vaquero is wrong then don't refer to it as an "Old Model". That simple isn't it.

As for the rest of us, the ones that think that a lot of the new models deserve a respect of their own, and refer to the original Vaquero as an old model Vaquero only because it's the older of the Vaquero models. Then it's our right. No one has the authorty to make the decision that old model Vaquero is wrong. You have got to realize that old model Vaquero only means it's the older of the Vaquero models. It's that simple.

As for stirring the pot. Any time someone tries to force me to use a certain term that there is no authorty to demand that one has to use that term and no other is correct, then I am going to reply to it. If that is stirring the pot then I am guilty. And I am sorry that if it doesn't go along with your way of thinking, which is your right. And you have every right to continue not to use the term old model Vaquero. And I, with the same rights as you, have the right to use the term old model Vaquero. No matter how many people think it's wrong.

So, since Ruger decided to start referring to the original Blackhawk as the "old model" we should all respect that....right?

What makes you think that I am "stirring the pot?"

Is that how you respond to a different point of view? Accusing others of adhom attacks and of "stirring up trouble?

If you are concerned about someone using the name "Old model Vaquero" and wish to try and make a point of it, I may agree that it is a technically incorrect name, but if you are saying that to use the term "old model Vaquero" is somehow incorrect, then you are full of hot air....do you not see the difference?

What exactly IS this trouble of which you speak? I certainly don't feel that it is troublesome to disagree with someone else's arbitrary nomenclature....do you?
