I am looking at a possibe trade and need to know the current value of a 4 5/8 barrel .357mag/9mm convertible in about 98% with box and papers. Thanks for any help on this.
Thanks again,Ray

Question #1 Does the .357 cal. cylinder exhibit any sort of Cylinder Ring? IMHO, that one item can "make or break" a gun deal. Question #2 Is the gun's serial number one without a "prefix" style serial number, i.e. one with a couple of numbers a dash and 5 more numbers or does it have from one to 5 numbers in a "row" on the side of the cylinder frame and no "dashes" between sets of numbers?

Pictures go a long way toward placing values on firearms! Something like this but with "better" photography would certainly help!

JMHO,

flatgate

I would put that gun at around the $600 mark. I don't see the shipper, nor the wax paper, or the business reply card. All of these items were shipped with it. The end of the box looks a bit ragged, but the internals of the bottom portion looks good. THe condition of the gun loks pretty good, but it's possible I see a few rub marks, (shiny spots) in a few places. It could be the pic & not the gun too.

I have saw a reference somewhere to a mark put on the frame of a 3 screw if the conversion has been done by Ruger. If this is true, where would this be and what would it look like. Also, exactly what is done during the conversion? Sorry to be so dumb about these guns but I have never owned one before. That may change in the morning. Thanks in advance for the help.

That is or seems to be the most favorable barrel length out there. That should help the price a bit. To me anyways..

When Ruger does the safety conversion, they stamp a "R" on the bottom of the mainframe. It's covered by the gripframe when it's re-assembled.

Safety conversion: The hammer, trigger, and some internal parts are changed out. Also a transfer bar is added. If the conversion has been done and the original parts are missing deduct at least $125.

Here is a picture of two Old models. The top gun has the conversion the bottom is original. Just cock the hammer. If converted it will have a step hammer and transfer bar. Other wise a flat face hammer and no transfer bar. Look at the different hammers.

Grips: It just may be the photo, but if the grips have silver eagle medallions and a silver screw and escutcheons they are the wrong grips. 1972 and later Old Models with silver eagle medallions will have a blue screw and blue escutcheons. Pre 1972 guns will have Black eagles and blue screw & escutcheons.

I wasn't sure of the year but that's why I asked in my earlier post. Thanks for sharing the specifics. I knew the panel style was changed in the early 70's some time.

According to the serial #(30-89494) it would be a late 1971 mfg.Grips could be wrong as I bought it from a LGS about 25 years ago that was going out of business. It has never been converted.
