Old Model Super Blackhawks hard to find NIB?

As a kid, I always admired the lines and high polish of the Old Model Super Blackhawks of the 1960's and early 1970's. Never owned one but now I would like to find one new or mint with box and etc. Don't see them come up for sale that often, but maybe I'm just missing them. Are they that scarce? Would like to get one in a wooden box if possible.

Anyway, greetings from a new member and thanks for any information (my first revolver was an Old Model Super Single Six. Bought it in 1968 at my college, Washington & Lee University. Used to keep it loaded in the dorm, hanging by a bedpost in its holster. Try that today!

I'm kind of off the beaten path, but I've been wanting an old model shooter for quite some time, and I still don't have one. I'm sure SC will have more opportunities than up here.

Are you planning on shooting it? I would suggest finding an OM shooter, just so you have something quickly, and then watch for the boxed mint revolver. They're out there somewhere, I'm sure.

Yes,, you can find minty OM Supers occasionally around here. If you lower your sights a bit, (no pun intended,) to a gun w/o the wooden box, it'll be a bit easier to find! (Cheaper too!)
You can get one in the normal cardboard 2 piece box much easier.
Now, you are in central SC,, not too awful far away from me. (Columbia is about a 2-1/2 hr drive,) and I have a few in my ragged bunch of OM Rugers. No, none for sale,, but I do have a shooter or three as well! If you visit the mountains,, we could burn some powder & fondle a few Rugers.

Last month I saw one listed in a local online classified ad. Guy was asking $800 or $850, as I recall. It was a 1968-ish Super BH, as new in box. It had a plasitc zip tie around the hammer to keep folks from cycling the action, and he claimed the cylinder was never turned. It also had the box, owner's manual, etc., all in excellent shape.

I'd have jumped on it, but for two problems:

First, I didn't have 800 clams to spare.

Second, I don't really keep collector-grade guns. I like to shoot all my guns. If I'd shot this one, I'd feel really bad about putting wear on a previously un-used 45 year old gun, and if I let it sit in a safe, I'd feel like I had a lot of money tied up in something that's doing me no good.

I understand the appeal of collecting, though, and thought this one would make someone very happy. (Maybe it already has.)

They're around. You just have to keep your eyes open.

Edit: I just checked, and the ad is still up, but I don't know if the gun remains unsold. The box is in good condition, not excellent. The asking price is actually $750. I could look into it for you, if you like.

First off Welcome to the Forum!
Super Blackhawks in the Wooden Boxs ( Mahogany Box ) are getting rarer to fine as the years go by, they can be found & alot of the times I find them @ gun shows. Generally serial #5500 & lower would have a Mahogany Box. It might be easier to find them separately & sometimes cheaper.
You could put an ad in the classifieds for one also.

Yes, welcome to the forum from next state neighbor. The gun you seek, OM SBH high polish, is out there and only with cardboard box. The reason SBHs were polished in the first place was to make up the loss of the no longer availability of the custom wooden box.

Nothing wrong with matching a high polish SBH with a mahogany box but NEVER STORE THE GUN IN THE WOODEN BOX! Rust to the max.

Not me ... I'd feel sad for the person that kept it in his safe the whole time and never got to enjoy it ;) :D . It would be 'my' turn to shoot it, if I ever ran into one 'accidental like'! I would be happy ... and the collectors happy as it would be one more out of the 'collector' pool :) . Win-Win.

Nobody ever said we collectors never shoot 'em. Some of us have two piles of guns; shooters and keepers. Shucks, sometimes I wind up with more shooters than boxed "keepers" of certain versions :D

By the most part most of the dull polish guns came in the Mahogany Cases and the High Polish guns came after the factory that supplied the Mahogany Cases burned. But Ruger still had a few of the Mahogany Cases left after they started putting the High Polish finish on the Supers.

S47 with regular Super grip frame HIGH POLISH FINISH, with Eagle rollmarked on barrel,serial number 3431 to 8650, shipped in the MAHOGANY CASES, about 2950 made. Also serial number 6 and 7, manufactured and shipped late.

S47 Long Grip Frame, HIGH POLISH FINISH with Eagle rollmarked on barrel, serial number 1525, shipped with a MAHOGANY CASE. Only one known.

S47 with regular Super grip frame, HIGH POLISH FINISH, without the Eagle rollmarked on barrel, shipped with MAHOGANY CASE. "VERY RARE" only 10 known.

Ralph, you just take your time and keep looking, good things do come to those that wait......we just recently sold about as new in the box, with the shipper and all here on the forum recently, nicest one we EVER sold and I've sold a LOT of them..........as for the high polish, to me , they are the "least desireable', as for the most part, they are OVER polished,This "overpolish" makes folks "think" the guns are all reblued, cause that's what "reblued" guns many times can and will look like,,,,,,,,So first the mahogany, cased guns, then followed by the white box Supers, and then the what we call "straight line" , serial numbers with NO prefix...the prefixed guns started in Jan 1969...to us, the best, nicest ones are the ones made BEFORE the 'prefix' ,just MY opinion, and I'll stand behind it..............then you can throw in the few that were made in the 6 1/2 inch version, kinda scarce, but again try and find a MINT< as new, about unfired ( a misnomer as they are ALL fired before leaving the factory)...you want to find the "complete package" the gun, the paperwork, any and all shipping cartons, make it worth your while, be selective (picky) Good luck
