What are the proper wood grips (more importantly proper medallion style) for a 1959 Flat Top 44 magnum. Also did they all have aluminum grip frames and ejector housings or?

Here's a picture of one I had for a short time. I believe it to be stock - 1959. Serial Number in the 157XX range.



Another forum member has it now. Perhaps he has a better shot of the medallions.


Here's one I still have but I think this is a 1960. Serial Number in the 240XX range.

All of my old model flattops have steel ejector housings and Alcoa made for Ruger XR3 aluminum grips.

Dougan's "Know your Ruger Single Action Revolvers 1953-63". On page 174, he shows a "Distributor Price Sheet" Effective Jan. 4, 1960. This is the first time that they show Walnut as Standard Equipment. Before that Hard Rubber was standard, so your gun was probably shipped from the factory that way. As sajohn states all Flattops were shipped with Steel Ejector Rod Housings. Not knowing the serial number it most likely was shipped with a "Straight Slot" Steel Ejector Rod Housing.

Dang it Tim, I have a set of factory stags tucked sway in the parts box for a 7 1/2" gun just like that one! Wish I would have known.

TechMech all factory Rugers of that era had medallions. Sounds like a grip switch to me.

what TY says, and at that time ( era) the Colt Scouts came with "plain" wood grips on some of their models, but the Rugers' walnut or black plastic (hard rubber) had them....there were MANY grip makers offering grips, of wood, stag ,ivory ,pearl back in those days, many of them out of New York, and NO medallions...........

My 1959 Flat Top SS was originally purchased in New York from what I know. I do not understand why anyone would remove the new factory grips and install plain wooden grips. Maybe the originals were plastic and the owner did not like them? I am almost sure he told me that the no medallion wooden grips are original. I am confused at this point :?:

Only the first few .44 Flattops were shipped from the factory with Hard rubber grips. The ones from 1959 will have Varnished Walnut grips with the skinny neck Blackhawk medallions in both grips.

Don't be confused those grips are replacement grips. He was trying to sell the gun and didn't want to say that they were not the original grips. They were probably a nice set of grips and he put them on another gun and sold the plain ones as original. :roll:
