My understanding is if the whole gun is steel (barrel, cylinder, frame) it is a super. The one I have on the classifieds is a Super if that's the case. How does the brass (anodized trigger guard) come into play. I've had this gun since the early 80's thinking it was a super. On another forum that was questioned. I don't want to misrepresent anything I want to be sure. Please help out here. I know some things about Rugers but I am NOT a collector by a LONG shot.

Ahh, the confusion of collecting Rugers!
Ok, MOST of the Bearcats have the gold colored trigger guard. However,,, there were a very few of them (about 110) that have the black colored trigger guard. Only about 7 have been found & verified.
Then along came the Super Bearcats, and in the beginning,,, they had the gold colored trigger guard. About half way through production, it changed to the black guard.
The easiest way to tell which one you have is by serial numbers. The Bearcats ended with 90-25622 while the Supers started with 91-00001. Notice the prefix change.
Easiest way to see that your gun is a Super Bearcat. It was made in 1972.

Contender isn't wrong, but I'd add that there are two kinds of "black" trigger guard when it comes to old model Bearcats. The first was an aluminum guard that was treated with a process that Ruger referred to as "japanned." These so-called "Blackguard" Bearcats are exceedingly rare as noted already. When the Super Bearcat made the change away from gold annodized aluminum trigger guards, the switch was to blued steel guards in the later guns, no longer aluminum.

yes the use of the trigger guards AND their 'coloring/makeup' can be confusing but the main thing is the Supers start with a #91 pre-fix, and of course Ruger "used up" their remaining inventory of aluminum,gold color anodized finished ones on the early Supers as noted above.............this is NOT taking into consideration of any repairs ,replacements, swapping of parts,etc,. simply check the serial number :wink:
