Old Betsy...............

Last night as we were leaving church, a friend of ours, a lady, told me she had something she wanted me to see. She took out her cell phone and opened up a photo. It was a man holding a flintlock rifle. He was dressed in the olive and tan uniform of Tennessee State Park employees. And he was wearing those white cotton gloves seen worn by curators.

The rifle was Davy Crockett's "Old Betsy." The man, she told me, was her son, from a previous marriage. He was curator/coordinator for East Tennessee State museums, and they were doing some sort of special presentation and he was the coordinator of the event and got to hold the rifle long enough for pictures to be made. If I remember correctly, she told me it was around Sevierville, Tennessee.

Seems that word around my church is that I'm some kind of gun buff.

A few years ago they had a Crockett rifle on display at the Contemporary Longrifle Association Show in Lexington, Kentucky. Wonder if it was the same rifle?

How many people name their firearms?
I own quite a few and have never named a single one.
Anybody name their firearms???
I remember a guy I knew years ago that named his 1911 "Baby" and his Mossberg shotgun " Old Moss", I thought it a bit strange but maybe a lot if people name their guns.

I'm sure that when I visited the place some time ago that in a glass box the rifle there was claimed to be "Old Betsy". It's been about 20 years ago....... I do remember at that time it was forbidden to take photos inside the Alamo. Outside and in the barracks was fine though.

I have one shotgun that I call "Double Ugly". It is a Stevens 311R.
This model has 18" barrels, and an fat stock with a military type finish. The papers that came with it state the 'R' was for riot. I guess the bad guys looking down the two holes would be encouraged to comply with your request!

I have a Winchester Model 24 sxs that I call the 'Ugly Duckling'. It's the only gun I've ever named - but I'm not sure if that is a name or just a description.

Only 1: My old 1966 Blackhawk with the custom foot long barrel that Bill Morrison put on it some 45-50 years ago! She's affectionately known as "Maggie" to my family and friends!

I don't name things on purpose, but some things get names on their own. I have a tractor named Rusty, because well let's say it's not shiny.

My Harley got named Ethyl. When my wife was on the phone with her dad, and asked me "what's your Harley's name?". Ethyl was the first thing that popped into my head. He wanted to know what model it was, not what it's name was. LOL!

No, none of the guns have names, yet.
