S**T Happens. Really that is probably the best explaination. Who ever was rolling the cylinders that day did em backwards.
It is a desirable variation and the 3 dgt SN# without the prefix too.

It was just an "accident" in the tool room where they were marked,, and since it didn't affect the shootability of the gun,, they were built. A desirable addition to any OA collection. I own one,, and was tickled to get it!

Thanks a lot for the replies and the welcome, it is a beautiful old revolver, has the box, manual, and the nipple wrench still sealed in the envelope. Can't say for a certain if it's unfired, it sure seems that way though. Thanks again for clearing up the mystery,

Those backward cylinder rollmarks are part of an interesting story. At first, the question would arise...why wouldn't Ruger just rollmark them however? But the story is, somebody at the plant got wind that in order to read those "backward" cylinder guns, the person doing the reading more likely than not had to point the gun to his belly.
Remember also that the blue Old Army had been out 3 years before the stainless was ever introduced. I suspect there are a lot more backwards cylinder blue Old Army's out there also, but...the only one reported is a Liberty marked gun. For you rare gun "cherry pickers", there is a lot of potential in looking more closely at every blue Old Army you see.
