It's Pecan season!! Had a big wind blow thru Saturday so went out and picked up about 8 gal of nuts. A lot of people don't do this cause it's a little bit of work for an hour or so. But I'd rather pick 'em up than pay $8-$10/pint for shelled nuts at the grocery store. Costs about 25 cents/lb to have them cracked and we'll get around 4-5 quarts of shelled meat out of it, and the shells go into the garden. Wife makes pies and candy, and we send some nutmeat to our daughters. Everyone wins for a little bit of labor and a few dollars on my part. Will be going out again in a couple days and get another 10 gal or so.

Gunny,
We've lived at this house for 20 years and there is this big pecan in the yard. Every year there will be literally a hand full of pecans on it. This is only the 3rd year there has ever been a bumper crop of pecans and the bleeping crows seem to be getting most of them. There are a lot of pecans falling but still in the shell. Kinda aggravating. But they sure taste better than the store bought things.

I earned money in High School by picking up Pecans; If you can "bump" the tree hard enough, the pecans will fall like rain. The Paper shell are usually bigger and easier to crack.
It does take a good STIFF frost to pop them out of the outer "shell".

We used to hunt down in Haletsville, Texas, and on the hunting lease there was a one acre plot of
Pecan trees. We would pick them up off the ground, and roast them on the fire.

While we don't have pecans up here I remember going "nuttin" when I was a kid. Mom would pack a lunch and Dad would drive us around looking for hickory, black walnut and butternut trees (rare, but Mom's fav)

We'd spend a day going from farm to farm getting permission and collecting nuts. An yes, we "bumped" trees...with the car.

Dad make racks for storing and drying the nuts in the basement.

After years of experimenting I can tell you a corn sheller is the best thing for getting the husk off black walnuts.

I still collect hickory nuts as I need them.
