Had coffee with my friend this morning. His daughter from Nashville is visiting over the holidays. She became ill and sought out a doctor. This is what he told me the doctor told her:

"You have flu like symptoms, but its not the flu."

"You're not contagious, but don't be around people."

Maybe he figures that since she's already sick, her immune system may not be quite up to snuff. Thus, she should stay away from other potentially sick people.

I got told the same thing after a trip to see my brother at the end of February out in CA; Could have sworn I had the FLU, but the Doc said "NOPE",just sick is all.

Of course...without taking a blood sample and looking under a microscope, all they're doing is guessing anyway.

Influenza is a whole family of virus'. But there are other virus', some even worse, that will give you the same type of symptoms. Remember the chills, fever and such are the body's attempt to overcome the virus.

With the propensity of folks to tell the doctor what treatment they need these days (thank you drug company commercials) the doc may have told the patient it wasn't flu to prevent the patient from insisting one being give one of the flu "wonder drugs". These drugs have a fairly small window during which they will have the greatest effect. In some cases, by the time the patient sees the doctor (thank you medical corporations that take three to four weeks schedule an appointment) you're either dead or getting better on your own.

Patient: Doctor, it hurts when I do this.

Doctor: Then don't do that.
I recently went to a doctor because of a shoulder problem. I was explaining the problem to him and said that with I moved my arm one way slowly there was no pain but if I moved the same way rapidly it was painful. He then said "Well if it hurts when you do that rapidly; don't do that rapidly." I could only smile.
