I want to hunt pigs in SoCal....so I got to get the lead out..need data for a good pig round..any body got one...?

Skip, never shot a pig but recently tried some Barnes .451 dia., 225 gr., XPB (solid copper - hollow point) bullets in my OM Blackhawk. I loaded these with 11.5 gr. of HS-6. This should be considered a "Ruger Only or T/C load" as it's a bit over what is specified for .45 Colt. Though I didn't have my chrono at the time I guess at a little better than 1000 fps. No signs of high pressure. Barnes makes excellent bullets. A little bit pricy but they are not intended for plinking. Check out their web site. They recommend using Accurate No. 9 in fairly high pressure loadings. By-the-way, I have no doubt these will do what you need done to any size pig. Best wishes. Gerry

Hi,

Are you going to be hunting in "condor country?" I've known a couple of people who loaded Barnes bullets for rifle use in that area. I believe Barnes has data available thru their website.

As gerryb158 mentions, they're a bit pricey, but they were reported to work really well! I'm sure their pistol bullets would, too. Dunno about pistol recommendations, but for rifles, some have suggested going a little lighter than you're used to, for example, a 150 gr .30 cal jacketed bullet would be replaced w/ a Barnes around 130 gr or so.

Should be able to get them from many of the bigger online vendors.

In rifle (300 wsm) I used to use 165 grain Nosler ballistic tips that I replaced with a 165 grain Barnes....had to fire lap the bore to get the stupid Barnes to group well.

After seeing a friend do a frontal shot on a 130# buck and blow out ALL of the backstrap, I switched to the 130 grain TTSX launched at 3500fps. I KNOW that rifle round will do you well.

As far as 45 LC, get the Buffalo Bore 225 grain @ 1500fps (out of 7 1/2" barrel) It's what I will keep in my Blackhawk when I go with the game warden on a hunt in the "condor zone. If you shoot heavy cast, you may need to adjust your sights to the Barnes....or just shoot lead and replace the cylinder with the Barnes as you walk back to the truck.....DOH!!!! Did I say that out loud?! J/K

+ 1 for the Barnes, for what you are going to use I would just buy Corbon DXP, 20 rnd box, ~$50

The bullets themselves will be ~$20.

Thnx for all the info. doesn't look like I have many choices...I wouldn't think a hollow point would get through the grisle plate on the pig, but I have no experience with the bullets mentioned...thnx again

These copper bullets hold together and penetrate deeper, the faster they are driven. I'll opt for the Buffalo Bore when I know I don't want to get caught shooting hard cast lead. I too, do not trust expanding handgun ammo on a pissed off boar. These copper bullets do not behave like lead hollow points, in that at higher velocity the petals seem to just get beaten back further...thereby penetrating deeper than a lead hollow point of similar weight.

At least that has been my experience. I really DO think the extra 300fps from the Buffalo Bore, compared to Corbom, may aid penetration.

If Beltmountian would put a Tungston core with a copper outer (machine turned) that would do the trick.

"I wouldn't think a hollow point would get through the grisle plate on the pig,..."

Don't shoot 'em there.
