I have a red pad varmint rifle that I would like some help with. I am wondering if there is a 2 piece base out there to replace the quarter rib?

Thanks,

Greg

I have never seen one, but there might be. The problem with scope bases on the #1 is the position of the rear base just forward of the receiver ring.

If you compare the distance from your eye of a # 1 rear ring to the same measurement on a typical bolt action rifle, you will find that the bolt action's rear ring is considerably closer to your eye. With the shorter eye relief of typical high power variable scopes, many people find that a scope on a #1 must be pushed as far back as possible in the rings to even come close to the right position for proper eye relief. Even this is not a real comfortable spot unless you have a long neck.

Custom rifle builders fix this problem by cantilevering the rear base back over the receiver ring, thus allowing the rear ring to move backward about an inch or more. This really helps with the compact scopes so popular today as they don 't have much " ring room".

What I'm getting to is that if you need the fix, it is going to be desirable to have a set of bases custom made. As long as you don't want too fancy, a gunsmith/ machinest can take a piece of blank Weaver rail and make a rear base that overhangs the receiver ring. The front base can then be positioned so that your scope of choice is far enough back to fit your body and the rifle.
