NM action occasionally wont cock

Got a new to me NM Blackhawk. Occasionally it will not cock . it acts like the loading gate is open but it isn't. When I open the gate and advance it a notch , close gate and all is well . It doesn't happen on any particular notch, cylinder not rubbing on bbl. I took it apart and everything looks good inside , no excessive wear or bubba work Help

With the gun empty play with it and see if you can reporduce it. If it does it try point the gun up and try again.

I suspect it is the transfer bar not going over the firing pin but into the firing pin.

Any trigger work? (trigger return spring altered?)

+1 Check that first. The spring/plunger that pushes the transfer bar out of the way might just be a little sticky. Point the barrel up and cock the gun then hold the barrel down and cock the gun, watching the transfer bar.

Sorry for the repeat posts, happened cause board was down and I should not have repeated. Compared transfer bar position with a NM that works. On the bad one transfer bar it not in contact with firing pin at full cock as it is on the good one. Can push it forward to touch pin but it springs back, Which spring pushes the transfer bar forward ?

Its the base pin. The little spring loaded pin at the end pushes the transfer bar to the rear so it does not rest on the firing pin. Back out the base pin .024" and the transfer bar rests on the firing pin and it cocks as it should. Looks like I should trim .024 of the retractable pin.

The plunger in the base pin is supposed to keep the transfer Barr from catching on the firing pin as the hammer is cocked and the transfer bar rises into firing position.
That part seems to be working as designed. Maybe the base pin plunger is sticking and not always holding the transfer bar back?

Just sent a New Vaquero 44 Special Sheriff back to Ruger, today, for this same issue. Could never isolate what the problem was and it has done it since new... finally said "piss on it"...called Ruger and FINALLY got them to agree to pay shipping...so, it went out overnight, today.

Bought a new ss base pin from Midway for 10 bucks. The new one does not have a rim around it. I will trim one of them. Have not shot this one yet. I expect it will shoot high with its 0.345 high front site, so I also bought one of the .450 high sites. Chose the SS Blackhawk 45 as I like the pinned front site, they don't do it on the blue gun. Thanks for the help. The one who mentioned transfer bar got me looking in the right area

Sooo, I take it the problem is solved, yes/no? Just what DID you find? The transfer bar is not supposed to rest on the firing pin but clear it as the hammer is cocked.

Yes, the problem is solved and here is what I concluded. Compared to my other Blackhawk NM without issues, the transfer bar on this one has a noticeable front to back movement(.030 ) at full cock. Other Blackhawk not much front to back. So on the problem gun, the spring loaded tip on the base pin pushes the transfer bar to the far rear where it rubs along the frame. All I need is for that pin to push the transfer bar back far enough so it clears the firing pin, keep it in the middle of that 0.030 movement. Trimmed .015 off the pin and it works every time. I am waiting on a reduced pull spring and when I take it apart again for that I will look closely at the back of the channel where the transfer bar moves for burrs.

Well, I never trimmed the original base pin, just shimmed it out about .020 and held it in place with tape while I checked to see if gun would cock every time. Got my replacement Ruger base pin in the mail today from Midway. From the center of the notch to end of retractable pin it measures 2.650". The original pin is 2.680". I'll bet Ruger shortened the pin on later guns to solve this problem.

Probably just the wrong pin altogether? I have never compared a mid sized frame pin to a full sized pin before to see if they are different?
