Night Sights getting dull

Night Sights not so bright

I had a set of night sights installed on two pistols a few years ago. One set of sights is still like new but the other has gotten dim.
Is it possible the gun oil could affect the sights?

The tritium should be in a sealed glass vial. Most likely the set that has gone dim was older when they were installed. It is also possible that the vial was broken and leaked.

I sent two Beretta slides to trijicon for new vials. Happy with the cost and results.

I have heard of SOME of the trijicon night sights going dim after a time. Maybe a call to who built yours can get things fixed.

I had some (insert major mfg here) night sights that 'HAD' been spectacular on a new pistol I purchased. Granted my geezeritis continues to flare up ever more often....yet this decreased glow concerned me, especially in compare with other newer sights.

Finally sent the slide back in, paid the (gotta admit REASONABLE) charge & now back it brings joy once again to my penny pinching nickle squeezing eagle-on-the-quarter choking heart.

Turned out my 'old feeble night sights' were going on 9 full years old. Yes, the factory tested the output and told me it was 'within age-norm spec' so I decided to replace them any way.

"Get 'er dun" & watch your satisfaction level increase a bunch as well.

Mine went dim on a few 10 mm’s, had my eyes checked and end up I needed cataract surgery. Sights are good to go now.

Tritium has a half life of just over 12 years. I estimate that you have about half of its original power after 9 or 10 years on your firearm. Tritium costs about $30,000 per gram. That gives you an idea about how little tritium is contained in the sight.

Trivia: The green color is a result of the phosphorus used. The amount used is so small it is harmless. That is probably not true of radium illumination.

I have a S&W 66-3 that was 0ne of 300 made for Lew Horton. The trijicon front sight is next to indistinguishable. I think I might take the front sight off and send it out and have it recharged or whatever they do. Years ago when I bought the gun I was a graveyard guard. Now retired it probably wont change my life but it made a lot of sense to me working nights.

I bought a used pistol and the night sights were dead. I called Trijicon and gave them the "date" on the rear sight. They said send them back and we'll fix them. They did and there was no charge.
