Thanks! This one is a copy (Cimarron/Uberti) of a 1872 Colt Open Top. Those were made by Colt as the first dedicated (not conversions) cartridge revolvers. Obviously most of the percussion revolver influence remained but these were never produced as such.

Only 7000 Colt OT's were made prior to the closed top 1873 Colt Single Action Army introduction. The Colt OT's were only made for a .44 rim fire cartridge.

The conversion Colts (both the Richards and the later improved Richards-Mason conversions) had the rear sight on the hammer. The Open Tops had the rear sight (small) on the barrel.

This Cimarron pictured is chambered, and marked accordingly, as ".38 Colt / S&W Spec." and not .44 rim fire...and for that I'm glad.

Real nice, I have one too with a 7.5" barrel. It is surprisingly accurate.

Very nice! I almost ordered one awhile back, but found a used rem 58 with a conversion cylinder, so grabbed it. I still may get one of those though eventually.

They are really neat guns. I have the .44 Special version of Cimarron's 1872. I had the action worked over by Bob Munden and it's a great shooter!

The grips on yours are outstanding!

Thanks Steve. The grips on mine were covered in the thick factory varnish (as usual.) I could see the nicely grained wood thru the depths of yuck. Stripped the finish with paint remover and rubbed in boiled linseed oil daily for a week or so.

Your .44 looks mighty fine. I'll probably get another but in .44 or .45 next time around.
