new sp101 3 inch 357 owner

Finally decided on the sp101 and the 3 inch for my 357 and first revolver. I chose the 3 inch because I already have the LCP as a pocket bug, and the 3 inch may help with accuracy sight radius when I go qualify for this thing for CCW.

Probably going to carry IWB, bought a blackhawk number 8 for that and it seems to work ok but trigger isn't convered as it's made for 2 inch model.

I bought some snap caps and having fun dry firing and practicing my trigger work. I will prob head out to the desert tomorrow and shoot a few 38's and 357 to see how she feels and go from there.

I'm thinking of buying the crimson trace LG-303 as I have the CT for my LCP and love it. Or perhaps a cheaper option would be just get a glow in dark fiber optic front sight and houge grips. What do you think?

I still may buy a used 2 inch if the price is right for an investment, I was at bass pro today though and thought what the hell price was pretty much the same from local gun shops and it's new and excellent condition.

I'd save the money and do the glow sight for this revolver, mine has no CT but as you my LCP does have the CT

I feel a CT works best on a Semi-Auto

But what do i know?

I have a couple of the SP101's and really like them myself. I don't care for the grip and switch mine to the Hogues. Little better angle for me and better control in the recoil dept, not to mention is doesn't whack my knuckle.

Congrats! I have the same pistol and IWB it in a crossbreed super tuck, highly suggest the holster as it covers the trigger guard safely and is quite comfortable to wear. Unholstering and reholstering are quite an easy task with this type of holster. As for CT grips, I do not have one on my SP101, but have the stock grip with custom wood inserts. I do however have a fiber optic front site from Gemini Customs and it works great. They offer them pre-drilled if you are not comfortable with drilling it yourself. Took two minutes with my local gunsmith to swap out sites and was free of charge because it was so easy. Keep up with those snap caps and dry firing, after endless amounts of dry fire practice and about 300 rounds through my SP101 the trigger is starting to be quite smooth. I too however, have an 11lb wolf main spring in mine and i works like a charm. 100% reliable so far, no problems.

I have a 3 inch also. It is carried in a IWB Ken Null customleather holster. You will enjoy it.

Congratulations, on your 3"SP101, and welcome to the forum. My 3" is my EDC and I carry it IWB in a Don Hume 715 holster. Enjoy yours!

I also have the 3" model and like it a lot. My build won't let me carry IWB but have a pancake hip holster that holds it nice and tight for OWB. I've had mine about 20 years and enjoy it as often as possible. Great little pistol. Enjoy it and shoot it often. And welcome to the forum from MO.

Substantial GP100 has been retired as home defense piece,many backwoods rambling applications, in favor thanks to short barrel 101,after 100 tote and experience,which was overall wonderful,still have the 100.
in fact pleaded with William Ruger years ago for a five shot .357 Magnum.
Not that I needed one.......Ruger's letter of response cherished.

Yes it does. That is one of the things I love about it. Of course it all but dissappears too.

Thanks for the reply.Reason is,my Ken Null IWB does not cover the trigger.The revolver does fit snug and the cylinder will not turn if the trigger is pulled but the trigger guard is exposed.Guess I bought it about 8 yrs ago.Called him and he said he's never had a problem.Must have changed it since but I do wish the guard was covered.Very comfortable holster.

I've got one and love it! Three inches is the way to go IMHO on the sp101 in 357.

I bought my sp several years ago and didn't know if it was gonna be a keeper for concealed carry.Mine is 357 and 3 in. brl. It carries well under a T shirt in summer and I probably weigh 165 lbs. and am around 6 ft. So it is not too large and doesn't weigh me down with iwb holster. If I go out of the house, it's with me.My holsters need a retention strap cause I seem to get dumped out of canoes and all other accidental & unforseen happenings. I'm pretty active in my older age and don't want to come up short a pistol. This happens pretty regularly and I don't feel like diving in murky water or mud for valuables.Lots of people lose guns but don't tell you unless the subject comes up.This is a MUST for active outdoorsmen so that passive retention or tension screw isn't as great in my mind as the advertisement says it is. Yes they will hold the pistol in but then again, I don't believe it's as strong of retention as we're expecting. (ask me how I know)Anyway ,,great little pistol with excellent power ,,med. to heavy bullets . Best wishes, Glen

If I recall correctly Simply Rugged states their pancakes have very good retention for outdoorsman.

I just got a new SP 3" in 357 and it seems like a neat gun. I fired it today, comparing it to my LCR 38, and it is easier to shoot tighter groups. The SP controls recoil much better and was comfortable with 357 150 grain ammo. I'll probably put a CT on it and a Simply Rugged holster, since I like both of those. I'll carry it in the mountains, when I don't want the weight of my Alaskan. Better sights might be in order. It's a heavy little fellow, but I think I like it.

congrats on the 3" i have a 2" but had a 3" befor i carried both for ccw you will be able to shoot whatever you want to thru it and it will keep on ticking for year of use

The Simply Rugged pancake has great retention. I love some SP101 in 3 inch.

I seem to see a lot of badger boot grips on sp's. Are they that good? I like the look but also dont have an issue with the feel of the factories.... so why did you change the grips. I dont want to spend the money if it is an alternative to not liking the factories which i do.

Harley, I can't see why you would need aftermarket grips as the factory grips do a good job.I shoot full power loads @158 gr, and don't worry about recoil. If your experienced with full power guns , it's a non-issue.If you just want looks or something new, go for it. About the remark about sleeping with your gun, is that a problem.My kids laugh at me but I close my eyes feeling pretty secure. Best wishes, Glen
