New SP 101-357

Finally purchased my new SP101 yesterday, after a long time searching this forum and talking to other folks. I hemmed and hawed over the 2.25 inch or 3 inch barrel. From what I understand the muzzle velocity isn't that much different, and the concealibility of the smaller seemed appropriate where it will be my every day carry. When I shoot at the range with my 38, it is usually 30 feet or less. The same distance would be the same for the 357. I look forward to shooting next Tuesday to see how she handles. From most reports here, it's a nice revolver! Can't wait to try it!

When you are working with a revolver of either barrel length velocity is a non-issue. They are both designed for self defense, not long or even intermediate range; think maximum of seven to ten yards. In either case, 2-1/4" or 3-1/16" are both great defensive weapons. I have both but prefer the 3-1/16" .357. That's just me, but some may prefer the 2-1/4" .357. If you want hunting or long range performance go for a longer barrel.

Congratulations on the new acquisition. After being a long-time GP100 owner, I picked up a 2-1/4" SP101 a few weeks ago. I've been very impressed with it. I'm waiting for my Bobby Mac holster so I can keep it with me all the time :)

The Grips are Altamont with Fish Scale Inserts. The Front Sight is a Gemini Little Wonder RED Fiber Optic.

SP101 in a Rocky Hill Leather Pancake. Also shown is an F Model ( J Frame) Jet Loader, and a Big Creek Kydex Speed Loader Carrier for the J Frame/SP101 Jet Loader.

The SP101 is one of the best concealed carry revolvers available. Just the right size and weight to be shootable. With the Little Wonder front sight installed I can now see the front sight much better. The Altamont grips are no more functional than the factory grips, They Just Look Much Nicer. This SP101 has an 8 LB Wolff Trigger Return Spring, and a 10 LB Hammer Spring, The Hammer has a .005 Shim on each side, the Trigger has a .003 shim on each side, and the Hammer Dog has a .005 shim on each side. Various internal parts have been smoothed up a little Per "The Ruger SP101 Trigger Job Guide by Kevin Wilson" A 5/64" and a 1/4" drill bit are also handy to clean out some of the factory drilled holes. I use the drill bits with the Quick Attach Hex Head Turn the drill bit by hand.. The hex head give you something to get a grip on.

I also put an Gemini fiber optic sight on my SP101, except green. I stayed with the stock grips.

I have the Wolff spring kit but haven't installed it yet.

Thanks for the pics Bob! I like the grips as well! I see you and Kho have those front sights just different colors. Are they easy to change and did it change your shooting at all?

The front sight is much easier to see (for me) in lower light conditions. You can buy the sight pre-drilled or not drilled. I bought the former.

The SP101 is a great revolver mine is a favorite but I prefer the balance of the 3.16" barrel.

I have both a Red and a Green Little Wonder Fiber Optic Front Sight, both factory PreDrilled. I think it is worth the extra $10 to get a pre Drilled one. Red on the 2.25 and Green on the 3-1/16. Same grips on both.
As best I can tell this is the best sight available for the SP101. A little high, but the best.
