New Single Ten First Impression (range visit still to come)

I got to take ownership today of a new Single-Ten (Lipsey's SS 4 5/8"). It looked perfect at the gun shop. However, when I got it home, I could see a gap between the frame and left-side grip! I tried pushing it against the frame, but it was not going anywhere. I decided to take off the grip, and could see the left-side post sticking out about twice as far as the right-side post, keeping the grip from butting up against the frame. I carefully took a file and took about 3/32" off the top of the post. (I know, I hated to be doing this!) I put it back on, and it now fits snug, and looks like it should.
Seeing as how there was a visible gap between the grip and the frame, I'm kind of disappointed this got by quality control. I guess with the demand for firearms, they're getting them out as fast as they can, and not taking as long to check them over. Oh well, after a thorough cleaning, I'm off for a range session.

Looking forward to a range report! I just picked up my Lipsey's 4 5/8" blued Single Ten 2 days ago. Everything looks great to me, but I haven't shot it yet.

Ah, the range visit. The Single-Ten is VERY accurate. It shoots better than I can. The trigger pull is very smooth, and I put 90 rounds through it before deciding it was time for a cleaning. It was starting to get difficult to load the shells, because the ports on the cylinder were starting to load up a bit. I was using CCI mini-mag CPRN's, so the ammo wasn't the issue. On my second visit, I found having cleaning equipment handy (bore brush, patches, etc.) keeps it running like a champ. About every third cylinder full, I'll stop and give each port a quick once-over, and it keeps going strong! I REALLY like the Williams Fire Sights, as well.
I did, however, decide after much consternation to send the grips w/frame in for fitting. I had gotten the grips to lay flat against the frame after careful filing, but the fit around the entire grip frame just wasn't up to par. A few people told me that I should send it in to get done right, so I called up Ruger and told them my issue. I am awaiting the return of the grips w/frame now. I was told they would probably just replace the entire thing, but I won't know till it returns.
So, mixed feelings right now. The gun shoots great, but needs finishing work done to get it looking as good as it shoots. I have confidence in the folks at Ruger, so I think I'll be getting a nice fitting set of grips on a nicely finished grip frame (there were some minor swirl marks under the trigger guard that I didn't like either).
I hope to be getting the grips back next week sometime, and will post when I'm up and plinking again.

Sent the grip frame and ill-fitting grips in to Ruger, with them taking delivery on 2/3. I just got them back (2/11)! They ground the left-side post down a lot, and replaced the wood grips with some that fit VERY well. It only took me a few tries to get the frame back together. (I thought I had it with one try, but I had something wrong(?), as I couldn't pull the trigger back)
Anyway, the gun is functioning (snap caps) and looking absolutely great, so I'm a very happy Ruger customer! Range day tomorrow!!! Yeah baby! :D

Hearing all the problems with new Rugers I'm begining to think that the first buyer is the only QC that Ruger has and if it's bad enough you'll return it and they'll fix it.

In today's manufacturing world there is no such thing as quality control.

It is quality assurance using statistical process control and random sampling. And given the number of ill fitting Ruger grips I have seen over the years, the factory probably considered yours within tolerance.

Am waiting to pick up this same handgun next week. It's my daughter's birthday present. At first I made the mistake of purchasing a new SP101 .22 without having her look it over. Turned out the trigger pull and hammer pull (for SA shooting) was so difficult that she could barely use the gun and I found it really uncomfortable as well. Sold it and took her to a few gun shops and she picked out the Ruger Single Ten 4.625" in blue. Can't wait for her (and me) to start using it.
