new sights for Blackhawk

I picked up a new Blackhawk in 30 carbine for my birthday. It's a fun shooter but I don't like the sights. The front blade is too narrow for the rear sight. That makes it easy for it to get lost floating around out there.

I'd like to tighten it up a bit. Bowen makes an interesting sight that is very spendy. I kinda like this one:

The problem is that it requires a different front sight. The sight on this gun is soldered on. That's what I assume anyway since I can't find a pin in it.

What would you guys suggest? If I go with that sight, what are the chances of someone installing a front sight without making a mess out of things?

Check this front sight out..... http://www.alphaprecisioninc.com/revolver/sight.html

I am planning on adding one to a BH and one to a New Frontier soon. I have not had one, but have seen several posted after the install and the owners love them. Looks idiot proof to me.

Thank you for that! Just helped me make a decision on shortening some of my Blackhawks!

I've used this rear sight from Bowen with a Gold bead before and had very good results.

I used a Ruger Redhawk front sight with replaceable blades which has virtually the same advantages but much less money!

If you have a stainless Ruger, you can get their stainless base with black pinned in blade. You can hide the screws under the removable blade.

When shortening a barrel or changing a front site on a Ruger SA, I just screw on another factory Ruger site. The single six target sighted guns come screwed on from the factory. I've not had any 'shoot' off even on a 44 Mag. I use a titanium screw. Ruger sights can be had in different heigths.
One example:

I cut my Dad's redhawk barrel and cut the sight off the piece of barrel, Mounted with two screws hidden under the removable sight blade, it was no cost and retained the changeable front blade features. People think it's a factory barrel length.

Check with gunsmiths in your area. Most that cut barrels will use some other front sight because it's easier and / or less costly for their customer. And most customers leave the cut piece of barrel with the gunsmith. I collect cut barrels with factory front sights still attached.

Now that is an idea Hondo. I have a bunch of SRH front sights floating around. What barrel length is that and how did you shorten the ERH?

Hi Chris,

The barrel was cut to 3 1/2" to make this shorty. Turned an additional 90 degrees, the barrel rollmark is now on the left side so it wasn't covered by the front sight.
A US Firearms cammed slot ERH from their 3 1/2" Sheriff Model was fitted to allow for sufficient ejection rod travel to eject cases, especially 22 mags. It also allows removal of the cylinder pin for cylinder changes in the field w/o removal of the ERH. A dimpled ER was shortened and pointed to more easily find those 22 chambers. When shortening a standard ERH, it's done from the rear end and most easily done in a lathe. But I have also shotened them with a hacksaw and carefully hand filing a new shoulder.

Ruger's "Bull Barreled" Silhouette revolvers have a "narrow" slot rear sight blade. The .357 maximum and the .44 magnums with "heavy" 10-1/2" barrels were/are fitted with Ruger's standard rear sight assembly however a special, narrow slot, rear sight blade was/is substituted for the standard rear sight blade installed on ALL the other revolvers.

I've installed them on several of my shooters over the years.
