In the process of finishing these up. Still have a slight gap between the panels under the trigger guard. I want to tweak the fit and see if I can get it to close up. Just had to throw a couple coats of Tru-Oil on just to see. This is the darkest walnut and the hardest I've ever worked with.

Where did you get that wood??
A neighbor to my sister had a walnut tree taken down a few years ago. I asked for a couple of chunks from the lower limb/trunk crotches. It's been very hard to work with. It has had many small internal cracks that show up as you work it down. Probably from when it hit the ground.

Actually the wood should be properly dried AND stabilized to prevent cracks & such.

Contender, I will definitely consider that on any future raw wood. Especially if it has any figure or burl in it.
