New Ruger 1911 owner

Hi guys....My first post of many I hope on this forum, I just traded my Ruger SR9C for a Ruger 1911 cmd , yep I actually found one I havent had a chance to shoot it yet but Im sure it will live up to everything Iv heard about it ( watched a gazillion videos about it ) and it looks and feels awesome , Although It does rattle a little bit sounds like the barrel moving a little inside the slide , maybe it will settle down with some wear. Anyway guys nice to be apart of this forum....

Good to have ya both on board ...welcome. Bought a commander a month or so ago. So far , its a decent 1911 for the money. Sounds like a few people have had some problems , but so far mine has been problem free. I've had two failures ... both were "failed to completely chamber" and were with my 200 gr SWC loads. I'm sure they were the problem and not the Rugers fault. It shoots one hole groups at 15 yds , as any decent 1911 should. 25 yds it opens up some ... or maybe I open up some ( :shock like maybe 2 1/2 to 3 inches ? Its not a target gun ...its fun. And WILL protect me and mine if the need be. Have fun

Thanks for the welcome guys, Ill be going to the range Wednesday I picked up a couple boxes of Winchester 45 auto 230 grain , Ill keep you posted on how the gun performs .

I"ve got 'em both...the 5" model and the CMD...great guns, absolutely reliable in my two examples. I use the full size as a range gum primarily, but the CMD gets some time in my CCW rotation. Last year, I shot the full size while attending Front Sight's 4-Day Defensive Handgun Course...600 rounds over four days, without a hiccup. Great features, accuracy in my two that runs slightly less than 2" on average with selected handloads. I think you'll like yours....Best Regards, and welcome to the forum. Rod

I love my cmdr it balances so much better for me and Ruger put the fiber optics sight o. For me on their dime. A friend of mine who is a much better shooter can regularly pickup my GU with my reloads and shoot under 2 inches. Enjoy

Go to Rugers site and they have a much better pic than I could take. I lucked out and had one of the sights that broke off and I just asked if they would upgrade to the fiber optic. They will send you a shipper install it and return it on their dime. If your sight breaks off. Oh and I'd recommend having ruger install the sight. I have close to 3000 on both guns that have the fiber optic and have had zero problems with it

Thanks very much I looked at the sight, Looks great but wow $40.+ for it but I guess made of steel makes it all the better.
I took mine down this morning for the first time and had a hard time getting it back together but finally did..load of fun with that one. Gun was very dry, lubed it up good oil only no grease.

It just takes a little practice you'll get better. The sights are fabulous and maybe you'll be one of the lucky ones that has your sight break off and you'll be able to upgrade.

You will like it. I love my SR1911s and SR1911CMD. I saw both in a gunstore about a month back for $629 down here in the SW.

Not sure if you're still monitoring post but I also just joined. Anyway the rattle may be the grip safety, it was on mine. You can adjust the sear spring to correct it. Takes about 10 mins. Hope that helps.

any 230gr ball ammo is fine, what the gun was designed for.

yea pretty ignorant to the 1911,been reserching the asym ammo at 230 looks to be a good way to start,a little small rust on the hidden hammer part ,scothbrite lightly,I can see I will really have to babysit this cmd,but I like it

That's why some people say 1911s aren't reliable, they are when cared for as they need. Things you can get away with on say a plastic gun you can not on a 1911. If not cared for cleaned properly and maintained a 1911 will not run well for long.

I totally disagree .... ive shot thousands of rounds in multiple 1911's without doing anything other than putting a few drops of oil on the rails every so often.

Thats the beauty of 1911's .... the ability to endure lack of maintenance, horrible conditions, and ham fisted soldiers lack of care and still function perfectly.


Most unreliable 1911's got that way because they had some idiot who thinks he's a kitchen table gunsmith .... sat down with a brownells 1911 catalog and a credit card, and bought himself a fistfull of 'drop in' parts ..... trying to make it better .... or customized .... And now it doesnt work anymore, so the idiot thinks the platform is unreliable.

The 1911 can endure almost anything and still function ,,, if only people would learn to just leave them alone ....

I couldn't agree more about don't fix what ain't broke. I haven't and do not plan on "improving" mine. Nor do I plan on having a gunsmith do it as most are not qualified (I think that is somewhat telling in and of itself) I also feel as do others, read my opinion, That the newer tighter tolerance 1911 need not more but more often lubrication than other semi's and older rattle trap 1911. There are items on 1911 that others don't have to worry about like keeping an eye on your barrel bushing, plunger tube, slide stop projecting into the mag well possibly causing the slide to lock open before the pistol is empty etc. Would you agree? Don't get me wrong I love and carry mine. I just think it needs a little more tlc than some. My .02 no more no less.
