"New" rimfire cartridge - 21 SHARP

Help Support Ruger Forum:

I predict an epic failure for this cartridge.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Winchester also had the WRF and WMRF.

It is a shame that no one had this idea 100 years ago. Maybe the .22LR would have vanished.

Only real problem I see with it is that even if the ammo can be produced at or below LR prices, ya still hafta buy a gun chambered for it., or at least a barrel. I see this situation as common to every "new" cartridge ever created. Anybody surprised?

I appreciate the development effort Winchester and Savage have put into this, but I sure hope for their sake their focus groups were right. ;)

Sorry, I just don't see this making the millions of .22 LR rifles in existnece suddenly obsolete. What I do see is the .21 Sharp being totally obsolete and ammo unobtainable in just a few years. You've all seen the speed with which the ammo (and gun) manufacturers will introduce, market, and then abandon a new cartridge many times over the years.

If somebody marketed a .21 Sharp 10/22 barrel at a reasonable price, I would probably buy one just to try it out. Speaking of which, does anyone else remember the .22 LR "squeeze bore" barrels that were available in Australia, 20 or 30 years ago? IIRC, there were 2 versions, one squeezing standard .22 LR bullets down to 20-21 caliber, the other even smaller. The Ausie government gun ban put the company out of business, and they've probably never been marketed here due to our hyper-active legal/lottery system ("Got a hangnail? You too, can become a gazillionaire!")...

As always IMHO, FWIW, YMMV, etc., etc.

There was a similar arrangement made here in the USA many years ago that only lasted a very brief time. I cannot recall the details, unfortunately. Perhaps squeezing .22 down to .17?

How accurate is it? There are some extremely accurate .22LR loads and rifles out there all with those awful, heeled bullets. Is this new offering more accurate than those? Can it defeat that Unlimited ARA target?

At my age (75) I have over 20,000 rounds of 22LR and over 1,000 rounds of 22 WMR. The 22LR all have lead bullets (OMG, we're all gonna die...) and I will shoot these whenever and wherever I want. I don't hunt any more so it is paper targets and tin cans. The 21 Sharp will sink out of sight just like the 7mm Backcountry will...

Well educated prediction and a small amount people will take the plunge.
Things haven't been broken in the cartridge department for years but someone is always trying to fix it....
But on the other hand it's great to see our Comercial firearms industry being able to offer various products to the U.S. consumer but I will stick with my .22 lr and .270 Winchester and above that were developed before I was born.
It's not that I don't disagree with change I'm just stubborn and set in my ways.
