NEW Mini Thirty owners....

I'd like to hear what newer mini thirty owners think of their guns. I've read all the garbage all over from older guns, say pre-2005ish, horrible accuracy, picky with ammo, etc. but these complaints all seem to be with older guns and from guys with lots of "buddy's" and such. So...

What do YOU think of your new mini thirty? Specifically I would like input on the 16" model 5854, but welcome all first hand input on newer guns.

I have the tactical model and it's a great gun. No misfires,jams, etc... Accurate yes whatever you read about the older models the new heavy barreled guns prove them wrong check some older posts on this site about 6 months ago. There is quite a bit of info available.

I have a new stainless 18.5" mini thirty. I changed the stock to a Hogue overmold and added Tech-Sights. I'm very happy with the rifle especially the stock and sights. I did have some problems with surplus brass ammo (light primer strikes) but no problems with standard commercial ammo. Also, the rifle has been very accurate.

Here's my Mini 30 with a Weaver 1x3 scope. It shoots consistent 3" groups at 100 yards using steel case ammo.

I bought one and I like it alot. It chews through any brand ammo that you put in it. Shoots into 2 1/2 " at 100 from a bench with a Weaver Nitrex 1.5-5X. My Dad liked it so much that he bought one too. His would fire about 50% of the time with Winchester white box ammo and never with the inexpensive Russian stuff. Cheap ammo is a big selling feature of the Mini 30 so back to Ruger it went. Their paperwork said that they replaced the breech block/bolt assembly, firing pin, etc. It shoots everything now. Accuratley too and all is well.

Mine's been flawless as far as eating everything I've fed it. Only used Ruger 20 rd mags. haven't shot for accuracy yet.

Somewhere in the last 6-9 months one of our members did a review of the new Mini-30 tactical when it first came out.... I don't think there was a thing he didn't like about it. and the range report was pretty dern amazing.... I tried to find this, but can't. It had a strange subject I think... something like tac 30 or such....

I know the review you are referencing. It was very well done, but I got the impression that he does this stuff for a living with all the gear he said was "sent" to him. So if he is a gun writer, the old saying is something like:

"A gun writer has never met a gun he didn't like."

One never bites the hand that feeds. However, there was much good info in that review. I just wanted to hear from the average Joe who happens to own a new.

I used to have one. I couldn't hit anything with it (it's possible it was just me), I had some failures to feed, and had the bolt hang up occasionally.

I sold it years ago and have never really regretted it. It looked cool, but that's about it.

i've got an older one and my biggest problem has been finding hi-cap mags that were worth a crap. i'm no marksman but it's been pretty a pretty fun shooter..........

Big difference between old and new...
I have two older models and one will put the first round dead on... I'm talking 1 moa with iron sights... then the next ones kind of strayh out to 4 or 5 moa... the 2nd one will have light primer strikes if using cheap commie ammo sometimes.... and as always after market high cap. mags are a gamble.... most will work okay if you polish the underside of the feed ramp and only load them to 75%.

I think the new minis with the heavier barrel is top of the line and now you can get factory high cap mags.
