New Metal Credit Cards ?

Anyone have one of those new metal credit cards. I have one from Chase. It was compromised so they canceled it right away and sent me a new card. They also sent and envelope to put the old card in and mail it back to them for destruction. Now I know why.

I don't know what those things are made of but I tried to use a 12" pair of metal shears to cut it up. I also tried left and right Dutchmans tin snips. The shears would maybe cut almost a quarter inch at a time. I had a heck of a time getting a cut horizontally through the number. The shears actually bent it up and kind of destroyed the numbers. I used some solvent and sprayed my signature and the magnetic strip. I could then use my stanley knife to scrap off the strips in both places.

Man...I could hardly believe how hard that card was to destroy. I used an auto center punch to destroy the chip. For as thin as that card was, I don't see how it was so tough. One could probably sharpen one edge on those cards to have a weapon in your wallet. Could it have been made of titanium?

We've had a metal credit card for a couple years now. I haven't considered sharpening an edge of it though. Hmmm, might have to give that some thought.

These cards sound interesting. I have not seen one, as technology travels slowly out on the prairie... :mrgreen:

I did hear some “alternative facts” about these cards, though:

The cards are part of a plot from animal rights extremists, climate change adherents, gun control advocates, and Communist quislings. All credit cards in the world will soon be changed to these metal cards!

The cards are issued by Chinese-owned banks, knowing that the American good ol’ boys/firearms enthusiasts will sharpen them up. The sharpened cards will slice through everyone’s leather wallets. (Read: wallets made from the skins stolen from our bovine and porcine brothers and sisters!).

The cut-up leather wallets (mostly Chinese-made, to start with), will be replaced with more of the same. Eventually, people just quit buying leather wallets- now, the animal rights folks/climate change adherents win, by making animal husbandry less profitable!

Frequent wallet purchases deplete discretionary income for the average firearms enthusiast, preventing the purchase of even a single box of .22LR ammo (which most of us can’t find, anyway). The gun control proponents win!

In a search a search for more durable wallets, people will want to replace their oft-failing leather wallets with Kevlar wallets. Meanwhile, the Chinese have all the Unobtainium mines (what these cards are actually made of), and they bought/closed every Kevlar mill in the world, except in China. SO, we’re forced to buy their Chinese Kevlar wallets, lest we get cut up and die from blood loss! The Communists win!

Reminds me of some Burt Renolds movie... maybe Sharkies Machine or such... where he takes a couple goons out who have searched him for weapons with his American Express card.

Wonder what's going to happen when the card companies figure this out.. that they are issuing deadly weapons to folks?

Wow.

Metal credit cards are usually heavier than regular plastic cards. You may want one for the practicality: members of our team have used a Chase Sapphire Preferred to scrape ice off a car window in the winter, and to open a door after getting locked out.

I've been using an old plastic credit card as a car window scraper for years. Probably works better than a metal one. :wink:

I have a key card left over from a hotel stay to use to pick door locks because I was using my New Hampshire handgun permit card and I broke it .............

In this vain.... a couple years ago when leaving a hotel room I did not swing the flipper door latch all the way over and when I closed the door it flipped and lock the door and I could not get back into my room... Hotel security came up and showed me how to flip that latch back from the outside.....

Hmmm...I've had that metal card in my wallet for over a year and I didn't think anything of it. I didn't realize it was something people coveted.

Plastic or metal...I couldn't care less.

Of course hotel staff would have to have a way to open the door from the outside. The most secure doors have a plate on the outside of the door that covers the slot between the door and the door frame so nothing can be inserted through it.

My wife gave me a membership to Playboy when I graduated from college in 1965 because we were moving to Miami and had access to two clubs there. The credit card they issued was metal, aluminum, I think. The only problem was it set off metal detectors whenever I went through one. The first time it happened, we had a devil of a time trying to figure out what set it off. I still have it, even though all clubs have closed.
