A few years ago I got a real "homemade knife" from one of my cousins. I'll post a picture of it one of these days. Anyway, I don't have the skills to make the knife blade, so I bought some from a knife supply company. All I do is add the handle. This one turned out pretty decent, at least for my skill level. Up close in person you could see all my mistakes.
I was playing around with Photoshop. The blade is 440C Stainless and made in Japan. It came with a high gloss finish but with 600 grit sandpaper I gave it more of a brushed finish.
And this view shows both sides of the handle. It's deer antler. I used polyurethane and wax to finish it.
Anyway, it's a pretty fun activity. Per hour it's cheaper than going out to a movie. I've found the more time I spend on it, the better the results, as with a lot of things in life I suppose... The leather sheath is next.
