New Black hawk problem

Just about a year ago I bought a New, New model Black hawk 45LC, I have put about 400 rounds threw it. Shooting reloads Lyman 255 Grain cast bullets with 6.5 Grains of W-231, not a hot load, yesterday, I shot about 50 rounds and the loading gate would not open, after taking the stock off I was able to get the cylinder out. There were no sings of excess pressure . all the cases were slightly smoked from light loads but all dropped out.

With the cylinder out I could see the gate detent spring had jumped in front of the gate, I was un able to drop the trigger and rather than force anything I reassembled the gun and took it to a gunsmiths. He said he had never seen this in the Black hawk.

Has anyone else seen this in the Black hawk.

I have installed the spring that way, with the leg in front of the gate, on assembly. I guess it could slip in front of the gate on it's own. The spring probably needs a little tweek so it doesn't happen again. :shock:

Yep, sometimes you can just push it down into place. Usually, you have to take the sixgun apart and reassemble it with the gate spring properly seated against the gate.

Check for burrs on the Gate Spring that rides on the Gate Cam, file or stone as needed...................................

I had that happen once, on one gun out of about three dozen.
I put the spring back in place and have never had it happen since.

I concur with the other posts. It "can" happen.

One of my standard procedures when fiddling with the New Models is to inspect, de-burr and "fit" that all important "gate spring".

What they said. It is not "common" but not unheard of either. I had one years ago that kept doing it, and when you looked at the spring it was bent a little too much so it would ride off. Two flat nosed pliers corrected it forever. Be careful not to put deep scratches in the spring if that is the problem.

Jerry Kuhnhausen addresses this problem in his Shop Manual, so it must be relatively common.

It happened to me. I just popped it back in place with the tip of a screwdriver with the gun assebled. I usually polish the grind marks out of the tip of the spring that rides on the loading gate and make sure the surface is flat. If it has a slight bevel it can pop off.

I have also had it happen to me on reassembly and now double check as a precaution.

Yep, happened to me once too. Didn't get the spring quite right on reassembly.

Thanks guys this is my first Black hawk, I own several Ruger semi – auto pistols and the 3 revolvers I own all have swing out cylinders. I really like the Black hawk it shoots great. I posted this on another forum, the guy over there seemed very knowledgeable on the Black hawk. He said the same as you guys, and recommended a little light grease in the bottom of the loading gate.
He also said this has happened to him on new guns as well, and that he felt it was more a quality control/ assembly problem from the factory.
