I'm wanting to get my son a 10/22 for is 10th birthday next month. I'm looking at the 10/22 Carbine and the Tactical model. Between the two he likes the Tactical model but is there anything special about the Tactical model that makes it a better choice over the Carbine model? From what I see the Tactical has the flash suppressor and shorter barrel. Is the barrel on the Tactical thicker? The 10/22 would be used for target shooting and plinking. Thanks!

I almost bought my son a 10/22 for his tenth birthday, and was trying to decide wich model would be best. I ended up buying him his own kayak instead. He uses my guns when we go to the range anyway. Ed

Not sure if the "Tactical" 10/22 has a collapsible stock or not. If not, both would be too big to fit him properly unless he's really tall for his age.

Proper fit is very important to develope proper shooting habits. If you get the regular carbine, you can pick up a stock for a song, and shorten it to fit him, adding a generic buttplate to complete the job.

The compact and Take Down models both have shorter stocks for a younger shooter. I started with the basic carbine and after countless bricks down the barrel, I still have it. It has transformed some now with a new stock and Tac Sol Pac Lite barrel, but it is still the first .22 I ever had.
