I was hoping I could find some threads about places to go for grips here, but the search function has not aided me well.

The two I could remember offhand were Cary C., and and Pvt Schultz. Cary is on hiatus to catch up on some stuff around home, and Pvt Schultz doesn't checker.

Anybody out there that does this, or have recommendations for places to look? I'm just after relatively simple wood grips, but want them fit to my grip frame, and I want them checkered. Not after any exotic wood or anything like that, but want good grips. It will be for my new Blackhawk.

All of the internet searching I've done has only brought up resources for slick, shiny grips. They're beautiful, but not what I'm after for this project. The top "shelf" on the grip frame is cutting my hand under heavier recoil, which I'm hoping to eliminate with well-fit grips. I think it's a little out of spec, causing the poor fit of the grips currently.

I haven't seen any offerings of checkering on grips. I suspect the main reason is under heavier recoiling guns, the checkering cuts into hands. The reason the grips are " slick, shiny grips" is to allow a bit of "roll" under recoil. I recently shot a 500 Huntington magnum in a Ruger SA. If it had had ANY checkering or anything to prevent the roll, my hands would have looked like hamburger.

There's a member here some I think using the name Woodpile. He might do checkering. Also;

Not really checker but...

I agree with contender, I've found checking to be a bad idea on anything that kicks. Take a look at bear paw grips. JB uses a different profile that's wider at the top that really changes the feel. I don't use anything else on bisleys. The plow handles ain't bad either. His prices are reasonable for what you get. He sells on eBay and will also custom make them to your frame. The bisleys were made from my wood and the price was VERY reasonable done that way.

Appreciate the feedback.

I'm going to look into Bear Paw. I like that approach and hadn't thought of it. For me, the normal plow handle thins out too much, and allows it to slip, more than "roll". I run a checkered grip on my blackhawk, and definitely prefer it. I'm probably running a lot light loads than what medicdave and contender are talking about. I see your point, though.

My palms do tend to get sore with the checkering, or with rubber grips, but I shoot with gloves on a good portion of the year, due to our cooler weather, so it's less of a concern for me. I'm going to email Bearpaw for more information.

Medicdave, can you supply more pictures?

Ask and ye shall receive. These are the bisleys, the plow handles weren't fit to one of my frames as I got them second hand and they don't do justice to his work. I'll get around to fitting one of these current fantastically oversize frames down to them at some point. Best way to go about it is find a piece of wood you like and send him the wood and frame. He'll fit everything up and send it back. Going this route was about $65 a pair IIRC. These are Macassar ebony. Come to think of it if your wanting less roll a bisley frame swap may be the ticket if you haven't tried one before.

Another option if you really need more grip is gnarly sambar stag. Not a cheap way to go any more but I'm a little addicted to it. The sets I use on kickers are still very polished and smooth across the popcorn to slide on the skin during the roll of recoil, sharp popcorn will hurt you.

If you look there's some really fat sets out there as well.
