Buddy used an hardware store hex head for this front action screw on his 30-06 Hawkeye, and, given how it's acting (like a bad mechanical torque), I suspect it's too long. The screw's shank length is approx. 7/8". This screw (https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1366197445) is marketed as a M77 MkII screw and its shank length is reportedly close to 7/16". I would assume that a Mk II and Hawkeye front screw is similar or identical but have no idea. Does anyone know the shank length (not overall) of a Hawkeye front action screw? Thanks

Ruger probably send you a free one if you call and ask.
Want to use a hex, not slotted, head (if they're still making them that way).

Can't help you with the length. However I can assure you they are the same between the hawkeye and mark II. Even same part number. As for Hex heads that is the current production, finding slot heads is a problem. Readily available from Ruger. Call with a serial number most likely they with send them for free. Next couple weeks they might be shutdown for holidays though.
