I used to have a M77 in .35 Whelan. I don't know why, but it was a real snot-slinger. Not fun to shoot, Elmer Keith not withstanding.
I have one as well. Damn thing broke the stock when I shot it. It sits in a Ramline now and use it as a bad weather gun. I agree on the recoil but honestly, I also have the Remington M700 Classic and it kicks just as bad if not worse. My serious go to .35 Wjelen is on a WW1 Oberndorf mauser action. It weighs about a pound more than the M77 or M700 and recoil is not bad at all. Not even with full power loads running the long gone Hornady 275 gr. round nose bullet. You can guess which one gets shot the most.

I just put an E R Shaw barrel on a Savage 110, it weighs in at 9 lb. 2 oz, recoil not that bad pushing Speer 250s at 2626.6 fps ave.

I just picked mine up the other day. Haven't shot it yet but I do like the feel of it. I doubt it will recoil any more than my stainless Hawkeye in 35 Whelen which isn't to bad with 250's
