Reading the sports page today and realized the NBA "playoffs" are STILL going on. They started back in April and it is now June and they are still playing "playoff" games. Do they ever end?

Haven't watched for years...got completely burnt out when I worked at an NBA arena, watching/working every single game, having to deal with their egos...and if it wasn't the players, it was their wives and/or girlfriends...

I was a big Orlando Magic fan in the `90's (moved to TN in `07) but when Shaq decided he was tired of being a "big fish in a little pond", it started downhill for me. After watching Grant Hill ride the bench for a couple years, I'd had enough.
Ironically enough, Shaq is a hunter and shooter so he actually turns out to be pretty cool.

I gave my wife permission to shoot me if she ever catches me watching any type of pro sports.
I will watch kids play anytime. 7 foot freakazoids making millions; I don't think so.
Watching my kids playing baseball and soccer at the Boys and Girls Club are some
of my favorite memories.

They are into the NBA Finals now. Takes roughly two months to go from 16 teams to the NBA champion.
All are 7-game series: If one goes the full 7 games,it makes it about a week longer than if it was a 4-0 shutout.

My intent was to have a question answered. I am a baseball and football fan and have no real love for basketball, so I don't follow it. I however did notice that they have "playoffs" that, to me, went on forever; thus the question.
Graygun's post is correct. Paring the field of 16 teams down to just 2 by way of a best of 7 games format takes a couple of months. More games equals more revenue for the league and teams. The more teams in the playoffs also equals more fan interest. Generally speaking, there is a better quality of play to be enjoyed by the fans and the players throughout the playoffs vs. the regular season.Fox Mike said:

somebody must like it, in the 2016 playoff "win", the parade got OVER three times the population of the city Cleveland to attend that parade.....now Cleveland this year is trying to "give it away" :? 8)

Ever notice how most every playoff series always manages to go the full 'best of seven' games?
Mysterious, how it always works out that way...almost like it was...planned. Naaaah, they would never do that, would they? More ticket sales, more parking, more tv income, beer, snacks, souvenirs....

I lost interest in the NBA in the late 90s, early 2000s. Haven't really regained much interest since then. Right now I'm enjoying the NHL playoffs immensely, which are as long and gruelling as the NBA playoffs.
As far as the notion that the 7 game series are rigged in some way, it's rather ludicrous. When you have 2 teams that's are both good, the chances of one beating the other team consistently are much lower. Thus 4 or 5 game series are less likely, th9gh they happen. Alot of these teams all well matched and also refs tend to call less fouls/penalties in the playoffs for whatever reason. That often make the game plan a bit muddier and negates some level of skill.

The Golden State Warriors went 16 - 1 throughout last year's playoffs. Three 4 game sweeps and 4 - 1 in the finals. Kinda dismisses that theory, eh?Doc Holliday said:

The playoffs are special in any sport and that's really all that anyone should watch in my opinion. Life is too short to spend in front of the TV :-)

Let me know when ANY of these teams/sports start paying 100% for their own playing venue and the companies start paying income taxes. OH and they don't force people to move out so they can build the stadium. Perhaps attendance would increase IF they lowered cost of tickets and quit paying people too much to play kids games.
The San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers built their stadiums with private funding. The Anaheim Angels paid for major renovations/upgrades for theirs. The L.A. Rams and the Golden State Warriors are building new stadium/arena with private funding...Colonialgirl said:

Pro sports create thousands upon thousands of jobs across the nation, all of which generate tax dollars. They also generate millions of dollars annually for the host cities/counties.
If one doesn't care to watch pro sports, for whatever reason(s), fine, that's their prerogative. But let's be real about the facts.

These gripe fests get real old real quick. It's the same thing anytime someone brings up a sport. People come out of everywhere to bash the players, teams, refs, fans, etc. It's enough to give anyone a headache.
There are issues to be had within professional sports, for sure. But the reality being, it's professional entertainment. Alot of these guys train year round to practice their craft. They have worked hard since the time they were young to be the best in their sport. They drive millions or billions in revenue to the teams and sports they play for.
I mostly watch Hockey and Football. I loved the NBA and Basketball growing up but lost my enjoyment of it awhile back. The same way with Baseball. I played for 13 years, loved watching and playing the game. However the lack of a salary cap and incredible spending of large market teams killed my continued enjoyment of it. I still follow it, will tune in for some games, but not a big fan anymore. I will watch the playoffs of any sport besides the NBA. That's some of the best entertainment. High stakes games, the most skilled player and teams, best coaches. Generally just alot of fun to watch.
Otherwise it's entertainment. Why some people denigrate it here really confounds me. We all enjoy different things. Some people think it's silly to toss lead at paper with sticks for hours, others love it. Let the negativity die a bit folks.

CG, it's a ripple effect. Billion dollar businesses such as pro sports create many ancillary jobs, tax dollars and profits. That IS a fact. While many jobs are indeed seasonal many industries connected to the teams benefit from the host business. Manufacturing, concessionaires, trucking, advertising, breweries, food suppliers, security etc. etc. etc.
Us sports fans get that some of you aren't fans. Why those who don't give a rat's *as about pro sports seem intent on raining of the parades of those who do is beyond me. Some folks are just contrary by nature, I guess. What a pity.

In Pittsburgh the building of stadiums has proven to be an economic boom to areas and helped rebuild and restore some areas. The latest stadium, for the hockey team was placed on the edge of a rather run down area known as the Hill District. Now 6 years later there are new apartment complexes going on, restaraunts, retail and US Steel has even started making plans to relocate their HQ to the area. Go back 15 year and you can look at the transformation of the North Side in the exact same way when they build the Pirates and Steelers stadiums there, now it's a bustling center.
I think you have the small scale sports conflated with events like the World Cup or Olympics which require hundreds of millions of dollars of infrastructure to support and often times in areas where that infrastructure doesn't exist, to be built, for a temporary event - not long term planning. In that case, it's just smoke and mirrors. There is no net positive effect on the host country/economy. That's well documented.
