Nice looking. I bought mine a few years back. They are a lot of fun. I've had the best accuracy with .457 round balls. I don't remember the powder charge, but I've got it written down in my black powder book.
I haven't shot mine in a while. I might have to dig it out along with a couple of other cap and ball revolvers and make it a day at the range.

Nice,, A very clean looking ROA, Yes, .457 round balls are best for me also. Looks like a custom front sight,,??? Tell us about it.

Nice lookin Old Army... I like the stainless and the extra cylinder. .457 round balls and 35 or 40 grains of 3F powder or equivalent should suit quite nicely. My first large caliber pistol was an Old Army, purchased when they were a new untried commodity. At the time it was the only revolver I could lay my hands on. I got a Lee mold and cast so many conicals for it I still have some around 35+ years later. That revolver taught me many lessons before I had to trade it in for a duty revolver, sure do wish I had kept it, havent seen anything close to it since.

I started using .454 balls rather than the .457s. and 25grs. Goex 3F. They are easier to load, when the cylinder starts fouling, and still seal fine. The barrel doesn't care it is .452 same as the Ruger 45 Colt.

You bring up a good point about the .454 balls. I have a Lee mould and found that the first .457 balls I cast, which are a little on the hard side, at least 20:1 tin, perhaps even higher, take a lot of effort to load. Pure lead is no prob. But I seem to get really great accuracy with the slightly harder round balls, better than with pure lead. I don't shoot light target loads, but prefer a full cylinder of 3F, enough to just seat the balls flush. I'm considering trying Triple 7 for more velocity, where there should be an advantage to the slightly harder alloy if they start hitting the 1100+ fps range. I'm thinking about getting a .454 mould for casting the harder round balls.
Oh, btw, great looking Old Army, stpetejoe. The high polish finish is stupendous! You will scarcely believe how much fun, and accurate, they are until you shoot it.

Question...the manual calls for grease over the ball to stop crossover flashing and I purchased the proper grease and plan on doing so,but a lot of the the posters on the different SASS websites say with the tight fitting 457 balls they don't bother with the grease,with no ill effects??what do you think?

IMHO The so called chain fire comes from the rear of the cylinder due to improper fitting caps. Also the grease is required on the Colt types because the cylinder rides on the barrel. No cylinder bushing on a Colt. Also the grease keeps the fouling soft. Well Windex will take care of that. I use to put grease on ONE round about every 3 loads, but don't even do that now. After you shoot your ROA look at all the powder and cap residue at the cap end of the cylinder. More than at the front.
Like I said I use .454s and do not use any grease. Most all my Pards that shot CAS do the same. IN MY CHAMBERS A PURE LEAD .454 BALL WILL SEAL As will a 180 gr. .454 bullet. I use a Remington #10 cap. So does everybody else.
I have probably shot 1500 rounds in mine in the last year and all have gone bang. When you pay big bucks to go to a SASS Match ya don't want to hear a click or pufttttt :wink: Just won 3rd place at the Texas State Match with no miss fires. Had some misses but they weren't the guns fault :oops:

I always wanted one of those with the shorter barrel. I still cannot figure out why they discontinued these.
Now what would be cool is if you got a cartridge conversion for it so that you could shoot .45 Colt loads through it.
