My first Blackhawk and my first 45 Colt

After all I've read about small throats I had to check. I can push a .452 Hornady XTP through with my finger without much trouble. A 45 ACP jacketed bullet at .451 just falls through

Welcome to the RugerForum. That's a fine looking Blackhawk convertible - I like those Bisley hammers.
I notice that your location says Orange, TX. I was born and raised in Orange and spent 40 years there before moving to Alaska. Orange is a good place to be FROM in the summertime.

I like the hammer much better than the one that came on it.

Agreed about the summers here, but I would imagine the winters are pretty hard up there

I'm working on new grips, I gave that a try because it was cheap and I wanted something better than the factory black plastic for heavy loads.

Not my first Ruger, just my first blackhawk

How does it shoot with heavy loads? Does it shoot high? Just curious as I can't tell for sure how tall the front sight is. I know Ruger makes .595" sights, but I have yet to have seen one on a new production revolver, especially one with a 4 5/8 barrel.

Yes it does shoot high, about 1 1/2 to 2 inches at 25 yards. I worked on the rear sight some to allow it to go lower and I haven't had a chance to shoot it again since then. If that doesn't work then I had planned to change the front

I bought the Ruger part from Brownells but it is not a drop in part. You have to grind off a pretty good hunk on the back side to make it fit. Brownells part # 780-012-007, $30.99

Power Custom makes some drop in stuff I believe but it's much more expensive, check Brownells or Midway.
