Since receiving my 1st ever Ballistol shipment, I've been digging through the safe on a gun cleaning tear. Came across my Stainless 5 1/2" Single-six covertible that was purchased in 1986 for $197. It is special to me because I won a bet with my Dad using this gun in the fall of 1986. I was in my mid twenties and being a rookie policeman was cocky about my skill with a handgun. I purchased the little Ruger and spent hours at my gun club testing various brands of .22 long rifle ammo to determine which shot best. It shot best (minute of squirrel head) at 25 yards with Remington golden bullet hollow points.I told my Dad that I was going to squirrel hunt with it in the fall. He laughed and said "If you kill 2 squirrels with it all season, I'll buy your deer tag". I killed 2 fat bushy-tails with it the first morning we hunted. He was surprised, I wasn't. A great memory that sticks in my mind. here are some pics.

A great story--yep gotta practice a lot--know your gun--harvested a few squirrels with a RSS too--trapped 23 at my bird feeder last winter--turned them loose in the big woods --well about 23 more showed up the RSS came out --a hawk also got a few and I think it got the ones I layed across the fence or a fox that kept coming by my window 8) live just outa town animals of prey everywhere in north Al.

Great Story! Thanks for sharing!

I have a stainless 6-1/2 inch version. One of my all time favorite revolvers!

PS Well, OK, my stainless 9-1/2 inch is also really fun to shoot..... :D

Great story in the OP and I have to agree with Mr. Flatgate....My 6.5 inch Super Single Six is one of my favorite Rugers. I generally leave the WMR cylinder in it and use it for hunting and pest control in my neck of the woods. Very accurate with the magnums, not so great with the .22 lr.....

I just can't "warm up" to the large grips on a .22......

This one has a "four click" lockwork, a "set back" trigger and loads on the half cock. The cylinder latch has been retimed to NOT ring the cylinder.

This one is pretty much original except for the tall front sight and a retimed cylinder latch. :D It DOES have a cute little star stamped on the cylinder frame....

Beautiful revolvers, Carl. I like the stags a lot, and I'll bet that star 9 is a hoot to shoot.

The big Hogues on mine don't look great, but they are exceptionally functional....Really helps me hold her steady.

Bearcat,

Mine is the exact opposite. 1/2 to 3/4" groups at 25 yds. with .22 LR. 2-3" groups with .22 Magnums. Also very loud and serious muzzle blast with the .22WMR.

Buckeye:

That is great. After trying 5 or 6 specimens, I gave up trying to find a single-six that was accurate with the .22 lr. I now just use my Mark II and it is a great shooter. Half-inch five shot groups at 25-yards if bench rested. Minute of squirrel head out in the field.

Bearcat,

I tried probably 12-15 different brands and types of .22lr ammo. Some wouldn't group worth as darn. Remington golden bullet hollow points were the best with CCI mini mag hollow points a close second. Winchester .22WMR hollowpoints shot best in the magnum cylinder,

Ron
