muzzle brakes

can any one tell me a good muzzle brake for the ruger .300 win mag?

KDF makes a good one, but man, to be effective a brake is very loud.

A buddy had one on a 300WBY and it hurt my teeth with plugs and muffs on. Kicked very lightly, even from the bench, but I needed two sets of muffs...

PS Welcome to the forum, sorry for that breach of etiquette.

thanks a lot captain kirk. do you know of any companies i can buy direct from w/o having to go thru a merchant.

It's kind of ugly, but I use the Miculik on my 300 WM T/C Encore. The darn thing costs about $45.00 and that's pretty cheap, I expected a 5.5lb single shot to bounce me around alot but the Miculik really tamed the recoil. The 300 WM gave me a "snap" back kind of like my 6 mm Remington 40X.

It is loud though.

That I don't know. Are you a gunsmith or are you trying to have it done locally? You or your smith may be able to order one directly, might take a phone call or two. I think my buddy just sent his to Seguin.

There are others out there, I know SSK industries has been making effective brakes for a long time. I gues these items are somewhat proprietary and the makers want to make sure they are fitted correctly, etc.

I have tried various brakes and the one that works the best for me is the Royal Arms recoil reducer. Available in several finishes and sizes for most applications. Priced reasonably and any qualified gunsmith can install one. Seems to not be a loud as the KDF or Boss. I think their website is royalarms.com They do lots of military type stuff, so I think they are pretty good at it.

I'd rather have recoil than a muzzle brake. JMHO.

I have to agree with this one. If you need a brake a smaller caliber with less recoil is the answer. The ONLY place i see a brake being useful is on a prarie dog town so you can keep your crosshairs on the target. That style of sbooting one always has earmuffs on. I dont know anyone that huntsarger game with them on and every brake ive ever seen is terrible loud! I wont hunt with anyone using one either...
