My love affair with the #1 started around 1996 when I traded an unwanted Colt revolver for a 1977 manufactured #1A1 in .243 Winchester. Problem was a previous owner had whacked off 3" of the butt for his kid. I put a black plastic spacer in to restore the proper LoP but I was always unhappy with the appearance.

Over the years I acquired 4 more #1s but that first one's stock kept bothering me. Finally, I found a replacement on ebay last month and paid more than I wanted ($156) but it looks so much better and I am feeling much better about the rifle, now.

BTW- I put the short one on GunBroker and sold it for $52 so I recouped some of my cost.

Yes, I stated it was cut and gave the exact measurements. Buyer knew what he was getting.

Lots of parallels between you and me. I bought a Colt revolver in Korea when I was in the Army, and when I came home I traded it for a Ruger No. 1 in 30-06 in 1976. First of many Ruger single shots over the last 4 decades. I love that 30-06, and a lot of jack rabbits and coyotes have gone to meet their maker because of it.

By the way, you did pretty good on the price of that stock. I've seen them go for lots more. Glad it worked out for you.

Hi Pig, you're right, it does look much better, nice job. Gotta love the #1. Don't want to steal your thread, but was wondering if you have found a round that your rifle likes. I have a thread running in the reloading sub-forum with no responses to date and I'm desparate. Found anything, either factory or reload you like?

I chased the accuracy gremlins in my 1A .243Win for almost a year. It was the most inaccurate factory rifle I've ever encountered. It would shoot Remington factory 100PSPCLs into 6" on a good day. All my early handloads went 3-4". Then I tried a max load of H4831 and a 95gr Nosler Partition. MOA for three shot groups. My son killed a truck full of deer with that rifle. I also found a varmint load with 75gr Hornady HPs that would shoot into .75MOA.

BTW, I never did anything to the rifle, just found a couple of loads the rifle liked.
