I do not know much about it except that Ruger makes a vaquero model called a Montado supposedly for mounted shooting, I have one because I thought it kind of cool, it’s 3-3/4” bbl and has a low spur hammer and is in .45 colt, not sure about other calibers

I've heard that some of them using those ruger's... I do know they download that 45 Colt and they put some kind of a light shot in it.. targets are only like 12 to 15 ft.. my daughter took a job in Oklahoma breaking horses... folks that own the ranch also trained these horses for this she's kind of getting interested in it... It was my interested she went back to college I guess we got to do what we got to do. She's got really good balance and been riding practically from the time she could walk and playing the rodeo game since she was about seven. She started shooting when she was about four so I don't know maybe this is something that she can do

The ones I saw doing this were using black powder blanks. The burning powder alone would burst the balloons at the very close ranges.

I never had the opportunity to watch them but she told me the owner is doing his own reloading for the for the riders..

The ears were the first thing I asked about they are protected, these animals are not disposable,,the
cheapest horse they have right now is $65,000. I watched my kid eat so much dirt that I was sure a couple of times she would hang up her Spurs now to watch her ride it is almost like she is part of the horse

I had a crazy Gymkhana horse that would rabbit hunt like a cutting horse.

According to the kid all they use is cotton ..she just told me that the rounds are so weak that it is not all that loud it's the constant training that keeps them from spooking... I really want to go watch it and would like to get her set up with a pistol or set of pistols and holster rig

From what little I know about this,, the horses are trained to accept the gunfire from their back. Yes,,, ear protection is used as well.
And yes,, blanks that burn the balloons to make them bust are used.

Its been a bunch of years since I did mounted shooting but,
The horses wear earplugs - expanding foam just like we do. We would train by using a 22 blank fired in the distance as we did ground work with the horse and keep getting the sound closer in later lessons.

We bought 45LC blanks made just for this sport from a couple different suppliers. I don't find them with a quick Google search, but remember Google's not always shooter friendly. We could break balloons consistently from about 15 ft. There is shooting with revolver only, 2 -45 colt revolvers needed. and another classe with both revolver and 45 rifle. A lot like barrel racing but slower and you have to shoot baloons as you ride by them. SERIOUSLY FUN.
But us older folks do better supporting the youngins.

Thanks you guys (can I say guys?). I come home and my 4 dogs greet me I say what's new with you guy's... I say to my gal's what are you guy's cooking up for supper...
Any how I know there are people willing to pay some serious coin for training and buying these horses and to take lessons from these young gal's training ,,my daughter flew out to interview for breaking colts and training barrel horses..and she's tried and likes the mounted shooting she will be 21 next month she sure knows how to have fun.
