Mossberg Terminates Relationship with Dick's Sporting Goods

manufacturer, announced today its decision to discontinue selling products to Dick’s Sporting Goods, and its subsidiary, Field & Stream, in response to their hiring of gun control lobbyists in April 2018.

Effective immediately, O.F. Mossberg & Sons will not accept any future orders from Dick’s Sporting Goods or Field & Stream, and is in the process of evaluating current contractual agreements.

“It has come to our attention that Dick’s Sporting Goods recently hired lobbyists on Capitol Hill to promote additional gun control.” said Iver Mossberg, Chief Executive Officer of O.F. Mossberg & Sons. “Make no mistake, Mossberg is a staunch supporter of the U.S. Constitution and our Second Amendment rights, and we fully disagree with Dick’s Sporting Goods’ recent anti-Second Amendment actions.”

Consumers are urged to visit one of the thousands of pro-Second Amendment firearm retailers to make their purchases of Mossberg and Maverick® firearms.

First in the door was a nice big Yeti display. Walked on back to the shooting section which comprised only a minor portion of the store. The gun counter had only a modest number of long guns and NO handguns at all. Guns are NOT an important part of their business.

Obviously they're going to be losing business from gun/ammo sales but that is a small portion of their business. However those same guys that go there for ammo also get a new rod and reel there, or look at new canoes, etc. Dicks has a large sports draw, but cutting out a significant portion of their outdoors business may force them to reshape their business model, or just fold it up completely.

It should be noted that Hi Point cut ties about the same time Mossberg did & SRINGFIELD ARMORY do so over a week ago. E-mails to those folks with thanks should be followed with e-mails to companies that are still selling to them.

I think the industry is finally waking up a little bit. We are at war. We are fighting to keep our right to bear arms. Gun owners are under attack.
What the politicians can not do is remove our Constitutional Rights,,, so many of those who wish to disarm us have changed tactics. While they enjoy the free anti-gun press,,, and the pressures of the anti-gun politicians,,, they still haven't disarmed us. So, they started fighting us in different areas.
First it was the banking industry,,, to try & remove the money for businesses. A lot of that backfired,,, but it did give them ideas as to how to attack us differently.
Now we have people buying stock in gun companies,,, with the idea to force them to bend to the will of their way of thinking. (Look at Ruger's most recent stockholder meeting where they used that financial power to influence what Ruger does.)

And of course,,, we have all seen the media, and even many businesses make POLICY changes to where they are installing age restrictions,,, or other such things to try & force guns out of our lives.

I have been preaching for years that the firearm industry needs to stand together, and make their own policies to where the average guy & girl on the street who have been brainwashed by the media & anti-gunner are forced to look long & hard at what is going on.

I fully applaud Mossberg, MagPul, Barrett, Hornady & any other firearm industry who is willing to start fighting back by making their own policies, to where it hits these anti's in their pocketbook. AND,, to push even further,,, the industry needs to use the collective power of the NSSF and adopt a simple policy; "Stop selling firearms & ammunition to the Law Enforcement communities that do not allow the same items for the average law abiding citizen."
I have been asking industry folks for years to do this. When absurd laws are passed restricting gun owners rights,,, the lawmakers always include the phrase; "Except for military & law enforcement." Well, I always want the military to have the latest & greatest,,, and military contracts are a financial boon to the industry. BUT,,,,, they CAN restrict their LEO sales, AND include any private security firm that provides personal security to these rich & powerful anti-gunners.

All it will take is a collective POLICY by the NSSF & it's members,,, to stand together & stand strong. Hit them where they live & in their wallets.
Dicks & Field & Stream are not the end all & be all. Not a big enough financial impact. BUT,,, it is a start,,,,,,,, and I fully support Mossberg & ALL firearm companies who are smart enough & willing to take the battle to the anti's!

It is an excellent move from all the companies cutting ties. That game goes both ways. As noted above they might not miss the gun business per se but what about those who might stop in to buy a number of things and a firearm or ammunition to be part of that. There are other companies that sell the same all in one items that may get more business.

Dicks and Field and Stream can close their doors altogether for all I care. I do not patronize them at all. Store full of cheap Chinese-made crap, for the most part.

Here in Pa. on one of the popular forums there is a big e mail campaign to manufacturer's who supply Dick's. So far High Point, Vortex, and Springfield have jumped on board to cut ties with them. Leopold seems to be on the fence and taking a wait and see stance. Ruger has responded also:

Many sportsman are boycotting any purchases from Dick's or Field and Stream. Keep in mind that a lot of sportsman make purchases for their kids, archery hunt, golf, fish, etc. These are sales that add up and can cost a company a lot of revenue. As a group we are powerful, divided not so much. I have seen this first hand here in Pa. with one of the largest Sportsman Shows on the east coast in Harrisburg, Pa. Long story for another thread but the sportsman rallied and brought the owners of that show to their knees. Outdoorsman spend a lot of $$$ annually and if we spend it wisely we can make an impact. Anyone remember the Smith & Wesson ordeal?
I think Dick's and Field & Stream made a wrong turn at the fork in the road and are in for a bumpy ride. There is a Dick's less than a half mile from my house and I have bought tree stands, jerseys, boots, ammo, sneakers, archery equipment, coolers, ammo, and I am sure other things I don't recall. I will no longer be spending my money at there stores !!

Another way to stand together is for companies like bass pro (cabelas) to discontinue the likes of companies like Yeti when they go anti second amendment. Cabelas has the power to do that, as the gun department there is like the meat department in a grocery store--the biggest profit dollar department. insulated mugs are not even close in profit dollars to guns, and guns is what they need to protect as it is their bread and butter. Yeti or any other vendor would feel the hurt big time without distribution in bass pro/cabelas. Like contender said, we all need to be unified in this, including strong retailers.

While their gun department may be small, if you add in the hunting and related equipment and apparel, it becomes a more sizeable portion of their sales floor.

I used to get a couple emails from Dick's and Field and Stream every day. I went ahead and unsubscribed this weekend. They wanted to know why. I said I no longer shop at Dick's. Perhaps I should have been more specific.
