More Fixed Sight Security Six Questions

I know the Fixed Sight Security Six's have been discussed quite a bit lately, which raises two questions about mine: (Ser. 150-657XX)

I understand that the low back, Fixed sights were offered in the early Security Six's. Mine is a rather late 150 prefix, shipping May of 1974. When did the new "high back" frame and the "Service" six come in to place?

Regarding catalog numbers, I've always understood that "SDA" meant "Service Six", while "RDA" meant "Security Six". My Fixed sight Security Six has an SDA catalog #......Were all Security Six's cataloged as SDA before the Service Six was introduced durring the 150 prefix?

There was an overlap of serial numbers during the change from low-back to high-back. It is understood that the change occurred in 1974. So during the same time period, in the same serial number range, you'll find both types.

RDA's were strictly adjustable sight versions, marked Security Six, while the SDA's were fixed sight, but early models, as we're discussing, were marked Security Six. When they changed the name to Service Six, they retained the same model designation, SDA. The stainless low-backs, with a 151-prefix, were made longer than the blued models.

Blued, high-back Security Six..................Stainless, low-back Security Six

thanks for the explantion Wayno. what is in the picutue- a low back blue and stainless, or a low back blue compared to ???

High back blued on the left, low back stainless on the right.

Notice how much of the 'root' of the hammer is exposed on the low back.
Notice also how the back of the grip, where the web of your had will hold the gun, is straighter on the low back and much more curved or indented on the high back.

I'm still kicking myself for the low back 4" Security Six I passed on this past summer for $350......didn't think I "needed" it....

We all do that to ourselves. I can think of several I let go sometimes for no good reason only to later find they are unobtainiums

Seems to me the fixed-sight version became the Service Six when the Sixes changed to the high-back. So, late 150's and early 151-prefixes...1974. But Chet has suggested the possibility of low-backs that say Service Six.

Transition guns are hard to track.

Let's just say I'd be more inclined to pay too much for a Low Back than a High Back. :mrgreen:

There's also a couple variations that I'm not sure whether they produced or not, and that's a stainless fixed sight gun with square butt that is marked either "SECURITY-SIX" or "SERVICE-SIX", and with the low back grip frame.
So far it would seem the stainless fixed sight Service-Six (marked "SERVICE-SIX") came out just after the change to the new high back type grip frame.
