More Credit Card Theft

I know there was a recent thread, about identity theft, and electronic theft. How did that turn out with the OP anyway? Did everything get restored?

My credit card number just got stolen AGAIN! This time some idiot used it for 6 bucks at some cheap hotel in Indiana. My wife got an email. The charge was denied, but the credit card is issuing us a new card. We are supposed to have it tomorrow. A small charge, which made me wonder if they were trying to be sneaky, thinking we wouldn't notice a $6 charge. Sort of funny, my wife asked me what I was doing at a hotel and why the credit card was denied. This before she found out the details. I should have acted guilty I guess...

Thus and so, the credit card is doing their job. Denying questionable charges and alerting us. Still, it is such a hassle. So while I am not out any money, I am out my time and my wife's time in dealing with something we shouldn't have to do.

I'm glad we just filled up the cars with gas and diesel. I do NOT like using my debit card in a gas pump. In fact, well I never have. I know they put a hold of like $50 on your account. Those don't come off right away either. Yes, I have more than $50 in my account, but I don't like the process.

Oh and my point of posting this is, y'all have to look at your credit card charges if not daily then weekly. I know my parents don't do any sort of online banking. They get a paper copy of their credit card once a month and look over it. Well, there could be many line items and it would be easy to miss one. As well as, not remembering a small $6 charge from 30 days ago. More like 45 with the mail.

I think it was Pat-in-Co, who said he looks at his every day. I know my wife does about every other day. I don't try and sneak anything from the gun store, but if I did, it makes it harder. :D

I was thinking they do a small "test" first as if they get "caught". it is so small nothing is done towards arresting them. If the test clears, then the big charges follow

Oh! yeah, I hadn't thought about it from that angle. A small charge wouldn't be a felony or anything. Hmmm. The part I can't stand is the credit card company doesn't go after these people. At least that I know of. Like someone else pointed out, they just pass the loss on to everyone through fees and interest rates.

My credit supplier recently caught some fraudulent charges on my card. First one was at an ATM for $3.50. Three more were charged shortly after at some dairy farm for $68.35 each. I too am getting a new card.

The bank called me one time and ask if I was in Bangkok Thailand. I said no, never. She then said someone was using my credit card buying gas there as we speak. Then she ask if I had been to Indonesia lately. They had used it there also. I check every bank statement all the time.

I don't believe so. The vendor is the one out the $.

Howdy Kevin: Just a note. My bank, which is Chase, is very good at stopping these unauthorized purchases. As you know I travel a lot so have charges in multiple cities in a months time. I have had multiple phone calls from them while standing at a Starbucks or eatery at out of town airports and hotels. I get a automated call that I have to acknowledge before the charge will even go through. You have to sign up for this service but it is free. They have stopped unauthorized charges 3 times in the last couple of years, of course you have to get a new card, which is a pain because I use that same card for all of my auto pay bills.

I reckon I was the OP. We nipped it in the bud, thanks to CreditKarma, they gave the first alert.
The bastards tried to get a card reissued, not uncommon.
To date only one account was opened in my name. No charges on the account as our action was fast and closed. If it had not been for CK, some sob could have spent $7500 on my credit before the pay credit services caught it.
All the credit reporting agencies were great. We check it daily for now, but with the fraud alert nobody getting anything for free.

I had airline tickets charged in Istanbul, Turkey. The setup was a reoccurring charge every month. The card company called me right away and the charges were denied. Had to get a new card, was a hassle, but everything turned out ok. The funny thing is I hardly ever use that card but I had purchased some things off the internet with it.

Yeah, we have Chase as well. Bank and Visa credit card. I've stopped using my debit card altogether after the last thread, some people pointing out they aren't as secure. But it sounds like Chase is doing a lot to stop fraud. I know they have a pretty big fraud department, and for a while I couldn't use my visa at Starbucks, they can block specific businesses where we've had past trouble.

volshooter: Glad it worked out for you.

Jimbo357: I hear ya. We order a lot online. Usually Amazon, but a few other sites as well. I often wonder how secure it is. Like how did someone in Istanbul get your credit card number? Not just the number, but your name also. And why don't they need a billing address for something big like a plane ticket?

Confirms why I use mine very sparingly and prefer to pay in cash.

Not always easy. I once got an email notice from T-Mobile that I was late on a phone payment. The bill had gotten lost in the clutter on my desk, and I just forgot about it. Not having yet found the missing bill, I took a copy of the email to the nearest T-Mobile outlet, and tried to pay them by check. The clerk says that they cannot accept checks. I attempted to pay with cash, clerk says that they can't accept cash, and tells me that I had to pay by credit card.

Right there I called Corporate at the # they provided, and was told that the clerk was correct. I told them all that Corp could just mail me a new bill, and I would mail back a check once it arrived.

What's the world coming to? Here on the border some businesses will not accept Pesos as payment, but United States currency? I hardly recognize my country any more.

That's something, when the ole lady dragged me to the mall once I tried paying my cell bill in cash, they could not accept that form of payment. It was not late, just tried to pay it while sitting at the mall with the rest of the husbands looking lost.

That would be a $ maker for sure!
Thankfully the mall closest to us has some place for us men to sit and wait.
I wish Walmart had a bench or two in the sporting goods area, so the wife could pick us up when they are done.

I use a debit card for EVERYTHING and seldom carry more than a few bucks in my pocket. It's just easy and according to my bank, you are no more likely to be hacked by using a card. All your info is on the web, whether you use online services or not and that's generally where it is obtained from. The only place I worry in the least, is at a restaurant where they take the card from your site. I will usually go online and look the next day.

My bank does an excellent job tracking things. I travel a LOT and they call me occasionally and ask me if I am in so and so state. No big deal. They did call me not long ago and ask was I in Ohio. I said no and the lady said, "yeah, we didn't think so". Somebody had made a couple charges with my number at a couple places in Ohio and I had used the card a couple times that day and she said it was impossible to be 400 miles away in 30 minutes. So they watch patterns pretty close. No problem.........charges denied........new card in two days

I mostly use Chase and a Cabela's Card. The Cabela's Card has been jacked 3 times, each time after we used it at a Famous Dave's Restaurant locally. We quit using it there and the problem hasn't happened again.

The Chase has never been jacked, but when I travel I always notify their fraud department when and where we're going. They have my cell phone number and say they will contact me if there's a problem but so far it's never happened.

If you have an American Express card, there's an app that notifies you in real time if they think they have a suspicious charge. It's allegedly fast enough that even if they initially deny you at the register, you just push a button that says that it's you making the charge and the second attempt to charge at the same register goes through. Don't know if it works as I've never been denied, but it's nice to know that that app is there.
