I have a 5.5 in bull barrel MKIII. I am curious what size groups people are getting with these at 50 yds. I'm just trying to establish an out of the box baseline to compare to. Thanks.

My MK III Target model with red dot will consistently put 20 rounds in a 1 1/2" circle at 50 ft with CCI standard velocity ammo. In comparison, Remington Golden Bullets result in 2 1/2" circle. The ammo makes a difference. Check out the following link for extensive comparison.

Thanks for the link, there is some interesting info there, but I'm looking more for accuracy potential of the pistol than ammo.

Um...that's not possible. The accuracy potential of the pistol is directly related to the ammo. Ever hear of an accuracy check that didn't involve shooting? In order to shoot you need ammo, correct?

Ammunition and your skill level will determine the pistols accuracy potential with all things being equal. Your pistol will/should perform better accuracy wise the more it is shot. If you want to know your individual pistols potential at 50 yards then experimentation is in order with various types/brands of ammunition. Iron sight accuracy will be different than that with optics installed. Testing done from a bench with a good rest will differ than testing done off hand. I would think you could expect minute of cottontail all day long @ 50 yards:-) I use this analogy as a long time game shooter. Good luck to you.

When I had the scope on my 5.5" MK II--virtually identical to your gun--I benched it with several types of ammo. My best groups were with Winchester Dynapoints--.5" at 50 feet. Other ammos went from .75 to 1.00 inch at 50 feet.

From that, I'd expect my gun to put at least some kinds of ammo inside of 2" at 50 yards. High-grade match ammo might do considerably better than that--an inch or so.

The first 3 shots out of my Box stock Ruger MkIII cloverleafed at 25 yards. I had to walk downrange and look closer at it to believe it.

50 yds is a distance I have not seen too many people use a pistol. Do you mean 50 feet?

No, he means 50 yards. A good 22 auto pistol will do 1.5 inches at 50 yards from a good rest! My BuckMark certainly does this, and I would bet money my new MKIII would as well.

Chuck can tell us for sure!

50 yards is certainly a viable shooting/plinking/even hunting distance for an ACCURATE .22LR pistol, which the Ruger certainly is.

As long as the wind's not too bad, of course. Wind plays hell with the .22LR!

Shooting at rabbits from 50 yds? You must torture and maim many rabbits from that distance unless you use a red dot or a scope.
25 yards is the most I have ever hunted rabbits from, but god blessed me ethics and morals.
50 yards is what the 77/22 and 10/22s are for.

My scoped MK II was actually more accurate than my best 10/22, and not far behind my 77/22V. (In fact, when I ran my tests, my 77/22V wasn't performing well and my MK II would actually outshoot it, too.)

I don't hunt, but if I did, and had the scoped MK II sighted for 50 yards with good ammo, and had a good, solid shooting position, I wouldn't hesitate to take a shot at a bunny at 50 yards.

I can show you a magazine article from about 1969 where the late, great Jeff Cooper tested a scoped Ruger MK I and declared that it supplanted--that is, replaced, or made obsolete--the .22 rifle for small game hunting out to 50 yards.

Just because you can't do it doesn't mean no one can do it.

I picked up this pistol to use as an entry level outdoor bullseye gun, which is shot at distances of 25 and 50 yards. Smallbore (.22 lr) handgun silhouette is shot to 100 yards.

I've been testing at 50 yards, since thats the farthest distance for this type of competition. With a 4 x scope, off sandbags, groups have been somewhat disappointing so far, which is why I asked for other people's experiences with this model. I still have a couple more types of ammo to try. Thanks to everyone who replied to my question.

V, your Ruger SHOULD be easily capable of holding the 10 ring--maybe even the X ring--on the standard NRA 50 yard target. Maybe you just haven't found an ammo it likes yet.

Many thousands of bullseye shooters have started out with guns virtually identical to yours, and done quite well with them. Drive on!

I think some clarification is in order from the comment made in regard to shooting rabbits @ 50 yards with a .22 pistol. I'm not sure if shooting lessons are in order for those who feel it can't be accomplished or simply some education on the subject. I've successfully shot and killed hundreds of rabbits up to any beyond 50 yards with iron sighted .22 revolvers and pistols. I never made it a practice to wound or maim in doing so as well. Doubting your own skill is an issue that has to be addressed by ones self, but make no mistake I have done it and seen it done by others capable of doing so. I've been shooting for 40 years and have also done so competitively. I've been afforded an opportunity to take a lot of game over those years with a handgun as well. While I know my personal skill level, I'll not attempt to decide that for others. You don't know me and you're assumption that I'm unethical in regard to game shooting is at best unfair. If you ever get down around South Louisiana please feel free to look me up and I'll show you first hand I'm not making false statements. Consider it an open invitation and I'll supply the .22 bullets.

Yeah, well Ive seen Chuck shoot a sixgun out to 640 yards. Cottontails at 50 with a 22 pistol aint no hill for this stepper. Doubters best keep thier folding money in thier pockets!!

Mr. DVRich, most respectfully, here is a pic of the accuracy of my MKIII at 25 yards with CCI minimags. If one isnt getting something like this with irons, maybe one shouldnt be shooting to kill on cottontails at 50 yards...

I have a 22/45 with a 5.5 bull barrel. Had a Burris 2 power scope on it last year. On the bench , under good conditions, it will shoot 1.5 inch groups at 50 yards. I use Federal bulk pak 36 grain cartridges. I put a Hi-Viz front sight on it and now love to shoot it with out a scope. Its now a very good plinker at 25 yds.

I agree that a MKlll would be great on cottontails out to 50 yds. One must practice and know his skills before taking a shot at game with any gun. With that said I am comfortable at hunting small game out to 25 yds. with iron sights. And 50 yds. to me would be with a scope MK. My eyes are not as young as they use to be. Also a shooting stick is a requirement for me at 50 yds.

Just wanted to note that Federal Champion in the bulk pack out did the mini-mags.
