MKII Cerakote Refinish question

Sorry that my first post is a question...

I'm going to have my MkII refinished in Cerakote and I'm assuming that I should detail strip my lower prior to taking it to the shop.

My question is, will I be able to strip and reassemble on my own, or is it it too complicated to be done by a novice? I can field strip the MKII no problem, and I have brass punches, etc, but I don't want to take on something that I will mess up.

Pete, welcome to the Forum, best to ask whomever is doing the 'coating' as to just what they want, need to make the job "right" sometimes ( most of the times ) when plating and coating tolerances have to be taken in consideration, and when you put it all "back together" you may damage,mar, or screw up the finish...the Rugers are more forgiving than a lot of the others out there, BUT the mainspring housing and its finish, comes to mind as to being "close enough" of a fit NOW ,without the added on 'coating layer...ask, it won't hurt. I KNOW of some who will NOT "guarantee" the job unless they do it all...............

Very good point. Thank you. I will leave it up to him. Besides, it's probably worth the added $60 gunsmith fee to have the pro take care of the tear-down.

Well... $60 just to dis-assemble the pistol seems a bit extraordinary. Especially if there is no preparatory polishing or blending included in that amount. I'd negotiate or shop around - cerakote is a very low-cost & common finish requiring no prep other than possibly a used-bead blast (usually included) to enhance the adherance of the paint. Removing the sights and complete dis-assembly is part of the job done right, and shouldn't be an added cost...
Remember to remove the grips yourself.
One thing to ask - if alcohol is used for de-greasing. If so, I'd avoid them and shop around. Alcohol is very dangerous in a shop and is a lousy solvent anyway.

My son is a "Range Officer" at a local shooting center and he works close with a vendor that does Cerakoting for their customers.

The Cerakoter gives two options:
1.) You strip your weapon your self for $X.XX

2.) If you want him to strip it the price goes up.
