mk2 safety problem question

i recieved a mk2 from my father,it was in rough shape,it had some rust and gummed areas,so i stripped the whole thing down and did some scotch briteing and some emery paper/steel wool rubbing to clean it up,i got the whole thing back together and now the safety latch will not engage the sear to remain in safe.before it was froze in place(fire position)
useing the parts view everything seems right and the gun fires very well with a 2.25 trigger pull and a crisp clean break .any tips on what to try ???

Check the sear and thumb safety operation. You can do this with the receiver off of the frame. You want to see that the thumb safety hook has enough clearance to capture the top of the sear face. If there's not enough clearance then is the sear face all the way rearward against the hammer? If not the sear return spring, long leg, may not be hooked properly underneath the frame crosspin. Also ensure the detent ball, in the back side of the thumb safety button, can move. If it cannot move it may be preventing your safety lever from engaging upwards.

its the detent ball---missing,either on the floor lost forever or was missing before i tore it down,looks like the manual says it has to be installed by factory,i may try and order one. thanks for the help

Sometimes they tend to drop way down inside the frame near where the heel magazine release is located. Try flipping the frame upside down with the receiver off and tap on the back with something like the handle of a screwdriver and see if it doesn't fall out. The detent ball can easily be installed by an owner, its the safety lever itself that is a factory only part.
