How do I know if a mini-30 is the newer version with the thicker barrel?

Look at the part of the barrel that is just in front of the handguard. Early guns have a straight thin looking profile right there and over the rest of the barrel to the end. But the new heavier barrel has a distinctive taper (large at the rear which tapers down over the next 1-1/2" or so to the smallest dia. of the barrel).
