mini 14??

Has any one looked at the mini 14 tactical in 300 BLK? Any one used any rifle in 300BLK? It looks lik it might be a fun caliber.

First off....welcome to the Forum.

I'm aware of that Ruger has released a Mini in the caliber you mention but no, I haven't bothered to actually look one over. That's mostly because, in spite of my best efforts while trying to get any sort of useful accuracy out of an AAC-branded Remington bolt action rifle in the same caliber, it turned out that I was mostly just beating my head against a wall. Fact is, I've got an old Winchester 30-30 that'll shoot rings around that thing.
Plus, when ya really think about it, unless one has a use for sub-sonic ammo and a can, what's a Mini in that particular caliber going to do that can't be done better with a "regular" Mini-30, or for that matter, even a Mini-14?

But hey, just because I'm not a fan of the 300 AAC/300 Blackout cartridge, don't mean that you won't be. Lots of folks seem to be having plenty of fun with it these days....so maybe you will too.

As I look more at 300BLK it appears to me that it could have a lot of appeal if using slower burning powders in longer barrels would be an area for improvement. But this leads down the slippery slope of wildcat hand loading. Definitely not where I want to go.

Thanks! I read real mixed stuff about the caliber. It appears that the supersonic loads are significantly better than the 5.56. If folks would forget their love affair with 9" barrels it could suffer a big improvement. The subsonic appears to be capable of good accuracy and would make great practice round—particularly given the increasing population density and the numbers of the anti-gun religion. But I agree that fixing the caliber would be akin to wildcat development. I would consider that if someone at least had done something so I could see how likely a real improvement would be.

Thanks. I think that you have a very good overview of the situation. I've shot a lot of 7.62x39 from an AK47 and it's not a bad caliber. A friend who lives in Alaska has a mini 30and uses it on black tail deer and even a couple moose. I've shot it and like it a whole lot better than the AR/M16 platforms. I got a chance to shoot a bolt action in 300BLk today but it's not real impressive. Basically I as thinking that the 300BLK could be reformatted into a much better cartridge. But I don't see fixing someones lack of vision and errors by throwing $$$$ at it and more than likely not getting anything in return.

Years ago my brother, father and I got into reloading and some wildcatting. So I don't believe that I can go out and buy one of these, tother of those and a trendy gun and get anything but a never ending hobby that eats money.

BTW with some experience years ago I don't muck with used brass—unless I've used it.

Thanks for the write up. It's confirmed my current reservations. I've come to feel that searching for the Holly Grail of Ammo is a huge waste of time and effort.

Thanks, I was sort of thinking the same. I was hoping that with the plethora of modern powders that the 300 could be bent into something more useful. I'll take a different route for now and see what shakes out in the future. Unfortunately it likely will not be the 7.62x39.
