That's what I was afraid of - just seems really odd to me. I did see some after market nickel plated mags - guess that is why I was hoping....

PMI made some stainless (not plated) magazines. I've got a bunch, both blued and stainless, and they work as reliably as the Rugers.

You'll have to hunt them up on the second-hand market - PMI went out of business years ago. They shouldn't be too pricey anymore, I would guess, because the ban expired and Ruger mags are freely available to non-LEOs now. They are good stuff - the only aftermarket mag that has a reliability reputation equal to Ruger factory.
