Mini 14 question

I'm not a mini guy, but while waiting for a reply on the serial number, I thought I'd ask the members here what they thought of this gun...

I know they are shoddy pictures, but I thought that the guys that are into these guns could see past the blurriness..

I'm just basically looking for possible input into what model series it could be. It appears to be drilled for a scope mount, and a flash hider has been put on... but like I said, I have no idea where to start researching without a serial number.

It's definately been used, but that's what I'm looking for; used...

Does have that nice M-14 type flash suppressor on the front...
That looks more like a standard side mount scope rail to me.

That is definitely an older mini14, ie...pre-ranch rifle. It has had the rear sight removed which is NOT necessary to use the scope mount that is on there.

BTW, that scope mount is one that screws into the side-plate of the reciever, I have one that came with my Mini and I do not like it. I removed it and installed a scout rail that is much more sturdy.

That scope mount is installed by means of a large(ish) screw that screws into the left side of the reciever (as mentioned) using a replacement side-plate. Set screws are used to fix the mount in place and keep it from rotating. This causes the mount to be pushed off to the left and out of alignment with the bore.

In my experience those mounts are fragile, and difficult to get mounted correctly. I advise you to pass on it.

The flash hider is a typical pin-on M14 style flash hider for a Mini 14. They work fine. No problems there.

As for the rifle...I would pass on it because it has that goofy scope mount and more importantly, the rear sight is missing. These facts make me think this gun was owned by a doofus.

If you have your heart set on getting it, it better be cheap. At least make sure that you either get the current doof...er....owner to include the rear sight or be prepared to source a replacement because I would not count on that scope mount (it could be made to work, but is just not ideal IMHO). The only good thing I can say about that mount is that it does not require permanent modifications to the gun.

The newer 580-series guns are better made and more accurate. Get one of those if you can. Really.

great feedback on the gun; it's much appreciated.

I did infact pass on the gun, so to speak. I put a bid on it, but it was very low and it would have been funny to get it at that price (plus the 18% buyers premium).

The gun finally sold for $425.00 (+18% if it was an internet winner).

I have been doing more research into the mini's and have found what you said about getting a newer version to be very true... Thanks for that info..

Dont fret on not winning the bid
The rifle looked well used.
And not knowing such info as the serial number to determine age as well as rifleing twist ratio and such.
I have an older ranch rifle and love shooting it. It is not a super grouper
but does fine. If you are trying to determine if it fits your needs you first have to know your needs.
I like mine but I have others makes that are tack drivers
You should pay any where between 300 to 900 The new tacticals are about 900 I got mine for about 350 a year ago and it was in very good shape with a 3x9 scope. I wouldnt have paid more than 200 for the one pictured
