watching the reporting on Fox News about the latest terrorist/hostage goings on in Paris and there was a live shot of one of the Paris cops holding what looked like an older Mini-14 with 20 rd mag. wooden stock . I am not an expert on dating them but it had the older style front sight.

Saw this on another forum:They are select-fire AC 556 rifles, you can tell by the selector lever on the back right of receiver. as well as some heavier operating parts to deal with automatic fire.

I love Ruger, but these French guys are armed with ****. I saw one of them armed with a 9mm grease gun. Which would be fine if the terrorists has mosin nagants. Lo

I heard once that 80% of all Ruger Mini14 Rifles were sold to other Countries, would work real good in the Bush. Sent quite a few to collect those Virgins in the big beyond.

I just noticed the same thing watching Fox News. About 10 or 15 Paris cops walking down the street and it was kind of a 2 second exposure. Sure looked like a mini 14 to me. 8)

Some of the Mimi-14's were in .222 that were exported. A few, (read collectable) in .222 are here in the USA. But I do believe they shipped both calibers to other countries.

I do notice the sling is attached in the rear through the stock and not on a swivel. (like an m-1 carbine)

Origin of the ramped front sight on early Mini-14s, as related by the Bill Rugers, father and son: French Gendarmes were prone to buttstroke and otherwise whack a person with their carbines. To reduce cuts and visible injury, the order called for a front sight sans sharp edges. Thus, the ramped, rounded blade. The Mini-14 was released in the U.S. with the same sight. As a footnote, during NATO rifle trials, the M-16 was more reliable in sand than the Mini-14----providing the dust cover was kept closed.

Later, the semi-auto and three-position select fire (semi, three shot burst, full auto) AC 556 series was introduced with M-1 Carbine style front sight with integral bayonet lug. Believe early French Mini-14s were semi-auto.
